Bill Hugh Wright

LAKELAND, Fla. - Bill Hugh Wright, former Ponca City resident, died at his home in Lakeland, Fla., on Saturday, Dec. 20, 1997. He was 73.

A gathering of family and friends was held in the Wright home on Christmas night Dec. 25, 1997, to remember Bill. His good humor, his generosity and his unfailing devotion to those he knew and loved were attributes not to be forgotten. Other arrangements were under the direction of Whidden-McLean Funeral Home, Bartow, Fla.

Bill was born in Fort Smith, Ark., on April 21, 1924, moving shortly thereafter to Ponca City when his father, Robert L. Wright was employed by the old Marland Oil Company. Bill attended Ponca City schools, until he entered the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He served as a tail gunner and flight engineer on B-17s and saw service in North Africa and Italy.

On Feb. 28, 1945, Bill married his high school sweetheart, the former Betty Lou Fallot, at the First Christian Church in Ponca City. After being discharged from the U.S. Army Air Corps at the end of World War II, Bill worked briefly for Continental Oil Company, then attended Northern Oklahoma Junior College in Tonkawa for two years. He graduated with a BS in Pharmacy from the University of Oklahoma with honors in 1951.

Bill was employed by Walgreen Drug Company of Chicago, where he quickly moved into managerial responsibilities. Early in his career, he opened and managed Walgreen's first self-service drug store. Later, as a result of additional responsibilities as an executive of Walgreen, Bill was based in several locations around the U.S. as the company expanded.

After 17 years with Walgreen, Bill purchased a partnership in a small chain of drug stores in El Paso, Texas. Under his leadership the chain grew from 13 to 38 stores with locations throughout the southwest. He and his wife and daughter resided in El Paso where Bill was an active member of the Methodist Church, the local PTA, the Horizon Country Club and was recognized nationally as a leader in the drug store chain community. He also served as a national spokesperson for Polaroid. His hobbies included golf, horseback riding with his daughter Betsy, and showing his mint-condition 1958 Thunderbird at antique car shows.

In 1978, Bill retired from active participation in the drug business and he and his wife moved to Florida to be near their now-married daughter, Betsy Wright-Lampe.

Always an avid reader, Bill took an interest in the book publishing business and participated in the founding of Rainbow Books, Inc. During the next 20 years, Rainbow Books grew into a nationally known publisher of non-fiction books. He was president of Rainbow Books at the time of his death.

Throughout his life, Bill and his wife Betty traveled frequently to Ponca City, visiting with his mother and father and sister Sue Hargraves and Betty's sister June Walker and her husband R.C. Walker. They also renewed old acquaintances at two Ponca City High School reunions, the last being their 50th Anniversary.

Bill is survived by his wife of the Lakeland, Fla., home; his daughter, Betsy Ann Wright-Lampe and son-in-law, Charles Marzen Lampe; and granddaughter, Jamie Fallot Peters, all of Bartow, Fla.

He is also survived by his sisters, Sue Hargraves of Ponca City, Kathryn Case of Merritt Island, Fla.; and three brothers, Robert E. Wright of Redmond, Wash., Carl E. Wright of Kent, Wash., and Buster Leroy Wright of Joshua Tree, Calif. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Robert L. and Beulah Coker Wright of Ponca City.
