EDUCATION
St. Mary's fifth grade Aqua Quest team, who placed first in the Kay County competition, came home from the Area II competition in Stillwater with second place honors. The team, who spent a total of six weeks preparing for the Aqua Quest, sponsored by the Oklahoma Conservation Commission, was made up of four participants and three alternates.
A total of 22 students participated in the Area II competition, including the winning team from Pawnee.
Marian Lankston, librarian at St. Mary's and coach for the Aqua Quest, felt many benefits occurred because of the competition. "The students learned quite a bit about hydrogeology and about Oklahoma's waters in general. It gave them experience in participation in an academic contest. Because of the way the contest was set up, they had to work as a team, rather than as individual students," said Lankston.
Study materials were provided by the Conservation Commission, and according to Lankston, "the contest was definitely not for the faint-hearted." Questions ranged from basic facts about Oklahoma's waters to world water facts.
"These children spent many hours, at home and at school, studying for this," Lankston said. "They couldn't have done it if their teacher, Bridget Styron, hadn't provided them time to come in and do this, nor without the help of Ray Ramsey and Deborah Carmack, who assisted in coaching them."
Ray Ramsey is a parishioner of St. Mary's and a retired Conoco employee,
and Deborah Carmack is the mother of one of the participants. This was the
third year for the contest and the first year that St. Mary's participated.
LIFESTYLES
A comical chili judge skit was one of the highlights of Professionals Today's Christmas party at the home of Ann Bandy.
The chili judge skit, which is reminiscent of the club's annual chili cook-off and Oklahoma barbecue championship, featured two experienced judges and one recruit. Performing the skit were Carmaleta Wesbrook, Debbie Whitener, Deanna Lowther and Julie Brown.
Another highlight was old time Christmas music played by a recorder trio consisting of members Gael Hancock and Barbara Brown and guest Sian Boyd.
A "Wrapping Fools" contest was another feature with teams wrapping unusual gifts for mailing. The members were furnished brown wrapping paper and string and could use any resource they had in their purses to wrap the packages.
The game was based on team work and team members could use only one hand each. Items to be wrapped were a basketball, a cowboy hat, a potty seat and an open umbrella.
The evening concluded with the annual ornament exchange known as "Dirty Santa."
The party was coordinated by Ro Mayse, chairman of the hospitality committee.
Elizabeth Halker was a special guest of host Ann Bandy.
