RSVP Hosts Open House at New Center Saturday

By KATHY ZEHR
News Staff Writer

The Retired Senior Volunteer Program of Ponca City and Kay County has a new director, new location, and is planning some upbeat new programs for senior volunteers.

Under the leadership of new RSVP director Marie Trenary, the program has acquired a new office/center at 110 North Fourth Street and the public is invited to the headquarters for an open house Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m.

"Come by, see our new home, enjoy a cup of cider, listen to Christmas music and register for door prizes," says Marie. "Our motto is "No one leaves without a smile - guaranteed!"

"We are very pleased with the new location, which is accessible to the many senior volunteers in Ponca City and Kay County," commented Trenary. The RSVP office had, until recently, been located in an upstairs office, limiting accessibility to many seniors with disabilities.

"When we were looking for a new location, I envisioned an office that could be utilized as an office/senior-center for our area senior adults. I wanted to create an atmosphere where the volunteers could enjoy dropping by for a cup of coffee and fellowship while volunteering for service in the community.

"They can also now check our new wall-size 'Community Needs' board for areas of interest where they might like to volunteer.

"By meeting on a personal level with the volunteers at the new location, I can better understand the services each volunteer is interested in, therefore allowing the agency to better serve the community. I can make the connection between the need and the service."

Plans for informative and entertaining monthly meetings will begin Jan. 12. Monthly workshops will be conducted, and are expected to be more enjoyable as volunteers work and plan in groups.

Refurbishing and moving into the new center took several volunteer man/woman hours from citizens in the community and, according to Trenary, was a refreshing adventure.

The history of the new RSVP office/center was recalled by some of the RSVP volunteers and in particular they remembered drinking coffee there when it was the Coffee Cup Cafe.

Trenary continued, "The community has pulled together for RSVP and we have especially appreciated the efforts of Jack Powers and the FFA students who assisted in moving our heavy desks." The agency showed appreciation to the movers by providing them with a pizza lunch the following day.

Other volunteers who helped establish the new location included Martin Trenary, who removed the large white awning which was transported to Bliss Industries to receive a coat of new paint. The Ponca City Street Department also replaced a broken curb, and poured a new concrete ramp for handicapped seniors' accessibility from the street.

Recently, 20 RSVP volunteers put the new center to use by gathering for an afternoon of fellowship and work. They packaged pecans as part of an annual RSVP fund raiser. RSVP volunteers are now selling those pecans, as well as handmade table cloths for the holiday season. Both can be purchased at the new center.

RSVP volunteers serve without compensation. Insurance protection is provided to volunteers while on assignment. Anyone 55 or older is invited to join the RSVP volunteer program. For more information about the program call 762-9412. Martha Acton assists Trenary in the RSVP office.

All RSVP volunteers will be celebrating the Christmas season at their annual Christmas banquet on Tuesday, at the Conoco Fourth Street Clubhouse. Outstanding RSVP volunteers will be honored at the event. RSVP is a United Way agency.

Westmoreland To Sign Mansion Books Sunday

By KATHY ZEHR
News Staff Writer

Only 10 limited collectors editions of "The Marland Mansion: A Photographic Study" by Bob Westmoreland are still available in hardcover form for purchase by Marland Mansion or Ponca City area history buffs.

Paperback editions are also available along with the limited glossy coffee table hardback books at Brace Books and More. Bob Westmoreland, native Ponca Citian and master photographer, will be at the book store Sunday from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. to autograph copies of his Mansion photo study books. The collectors hardback edition sells for $150 and the paperback prints are $8.95 each.

Westmoreland, who made the historic photographic study of the beautiful Marland Mansion several years ago, says photographing the beautiful "Castle on the Prairie" was one of his favorite projects.

In addition to his photographic study of the Mansion, Westmoreland has photographed most of Ponca City's historical sites and was responsible for the assembly of an audio/visual history of Ponca City in 1977.

The teacher, professional photographer, television producer, audiovisual producer, author, and consultant has appeared numerous times before national and state audiences as a convention speaker on photography, and has consulted for businesses and agencies worldwide.

Equally talented as a musician, Westmoreland began his career as solo clarinetist and drum major at Ponca City High School. He played in the U.S. Navy Orchestra at age 18, broadcasting to a worldwide audience. Professionally he entertained in New York, Miami Beach, Las Vegas, Reno and Hollywood after World War II. In the 1950s he returned to Ponca City to teach music and begin his professional photography career. For several years he and his band entertained at local and state affairs.

In the 1960s he began employment with Continental Oil Co. and with skills learned there, using process camera and industrial type photography, he was eventually selected as audio/visual director for the Ponca City schools.

Bob designed and installed "Studio See," for the schools, where he produced more than 2,000 instructional TV tapes covering science, art, music, math, and a variety of subjects. His book "Television Production Shortcuts," was published by the University of Oklahoma Press in 1974 and used as a textbook throughout the U.S.

In 1980 he was selected as one the elite first 15 photographers in Oklahoma to be certified as a professional photographer by the Professional Photographers of America.

Over the years, Bob's willingness to share his talents has resulted in his sharing knowledge with many others including tutoring woodwind students for the Ponca City and Blackwell schools for more than 20 years, teaching photography classes at the Ponca City Art Center for more than 12 years, and donating his time to numerous lectures, workshops, and demonstrations for various groups, including the recent Photographic Society of American International Convention held in San Antonio.

His 1992 "Route 66 - A Portrait of Main Street USA," was exhibited at the International Photography Hall of fame located in Kirkpatrick Center in Oklahoma City. His 66 black and white prints also formed the basis of the opening exhibit at the Oklahoma Historical Society's Route 66 Museum in 1993.

He is planning a new show titled "Hopes and Dreams" scheduled to be exhibited at the Photography Hall of Fame in March and April 1998.

Fultz will receive a $100 cash award and a plaque at the next board meeting. Her name will be added to the traveling plaque and it will hang in the Ponca City Community Support Center for the next quarter.
