Author Here Wednesday For Autographing Session
Annick Smith, author of "Big Bluestem: Journey Into the Tall Grass"
will be in Ponca City Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Brace Books
and More to autograph copies of her book about the Tall Grass Prairie Preserve
near Pawhuska.
The book contains 200 color photographs by Harvey Payne and approximately
100 black and white archival pictures, to make a very attractive book. Payne
will be in Ponca City in December to autograph books. He is director of
the Nature Conservancy's Tallgrass Prairie Preserve.
A committed conservationalist, Smith writes a graceful history - both natural
and cultural of the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve, the 37,500-acre refuge,
in Osage County.
When the possibility of a national prairie preserve in Oklahoma foundered
on political shoals in 1987, the Nature Conservancy stepped in. The goals
were to protect some of the native plants and animals of the only "substantial
biome that had not been included in a system of national parks and preserves
and allow the public to experience a taste of prairie lifestyle.
"It is impossible to fully understand America without seeing the prairie,"
proclaimed Oklahoma Senator David Boren when bison were released into the
preserve in 1993.
"Smith does an admirable job of describing wildlife, nicely balancing
the biological with the aesthetic," writes Publishers Weekly.
"She excels in recreating what has truly been lost - the people and
cultures of the American prairie. She writes of the lives of Native Americans,
ranchers, oil workers and townsfolk with sensitivity but without undue nostalgia."

The Oklahoma Health Care Authority effectively implemented the new Medicaid
managed care program, SoonerCare, Oct. 1 for persons in the rural areas
of the state who receive Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC).
Under SoonerCare, primary care providers will receive a monthly payment
to deliver primary care and case management services to their enrolled members.
The open enrollment period that began in August resulted in 52,000 eligible
members who either selected or were assigned to primary care providers throughout

program since the provider directory was mailed in the August materials.
Consequently, the Health Care Authority has extended the thirty-day change
period to ninety days. This will allow members to select a provider who
better suits their needs, or to change to a provider who may be closer to
their home. Recipients may change primary care providers until Dec. 31 by
calling the SoonerOare help line at (800) 987-7767. After that date, all

SPORTS
Wildcat Swimmers Do Better at Union
TULSA - Po-Hi swim coach Dave Strah felt a little better about the Wildcats
after participating in the Union Invitational Saturday.
Still short in numbers, Strah was pleased with the effort by his teams as
the boys placed seventh and the girls were 12th in the 17-team field.
"Although we're still not scoring a lot of points, the kids are trying
hard," Strah said. "They have already hit some personal bests."
The Wildcats scored 31 points to beat out Stillwater (eighth with 29 points),
the team they lost to in a dual meet earlier. They also topped Frontier
Conference foe Bartlesville, which was ninth with 28 points.
Jenks won the meet with 151 points while Westmoore, which will be here for
the Poncans' home-opening dual Thursday, was second with 108 points.
Michael Grubb placed third in the boys' diving.
Rory Peterson paced the swimmers, placing fourth in the 200-yard freestyle
in 2:05.85 and sixth in the 100 freestyle in 58.23.
D.J. Nuzum continues to edge closer to state qualifying times, placing sixth
in the 500-yard freestyle in 6:09.46 and 11th in the 100 free in 2:18.70.

Poncans on State Team
SPRINGDALE, Ark. - Two Ponca City cross country runners were part of the
Oklahoma team which ran against Kansas and Arkansas in the Meet of Champions
here Saturday.
The top 30 high school runners, regardless of class, were selected to the
state teams.
Wildcats Sam Stalcup and Paul Pascal took part in the 3-mile run over the
University of Arkansas course.
Stalcup finished 29th in 16:42 and scored for the Oklahoma team by being
the 10th Okie across the final line. Pascal, who ran into trouble on the
last leg of the run, was 37th in 16:59.
"Both ran good races," Po-Hi coach Kelly Chaney said. "After
the first mile they were in the middle of the pack with a time of about
5:30, which was where I wanted them to be.
"At the 2-mile mark, Paul was 23rd in 10:05 and Sam was about 40th
in 10:20.
About 400 meters from the end, Paul moved up to 17th, but he misjudged the
distance to the finish, which was further than he had thought. When you
start you're sprint to quickly, you kind of die at the end.
"This was a real honor for these two to be picked to the state team."
