Strong Wind Damages Lowe’s As Storm Rips Through Area

By PATTI PFEIFFER

News Staff Writer

For the second time in less than three days Ponca City was hit by severe storms, the latest brought damage as well as flooding.

This time the area was spared the 8 inches of rain that fell overnight Thursday, however high winds caused havoc to one area business, where fence pickets were reportedly picked up and thrown onto the roof like spears, piercing the roof.

“We have over 200 holes in our roof from the boards that were stuck into it,” said Lowe’s Store Manager Mark Brown. “The winds had to be as high as 80-90 mph to pick up the sections of roof panels that it did.”

Brown and his employees were at the store when the storm hit about 6 p.m. Sunday. “We were just hanging on — it sounded like a loud roar coming over our roof,” he said. “We could see a tornado on the horizon about 5 p.m. and so we started getting ready, doing what we could and anchoring down things we felt might fly.”

Damage was not limited to the roof. “There was a lot of structural damage to the southwest corner of the building in the lumber yard and in the garden center,” said Assistant Manager Todd McCombs.

In addition, several portable storage buildings were damaged as the wind toppled them over, plants in the garden center were reportedly crushed as nearby pallets were blown onto them and there was 2 inches of water standing in the warehouse this morning.

Several local roads and U.S. 35 were closed for flooding for a period this morning as the soaked soil was unable to absorb yet another deposit of the rain.

According to the Associated Press, a Kay County sheriff’s dispatcher said most of the county roads were closed by high water. U.S. Highway 177 south of Ponca City was closed as was old Highway 60 at Tonkawa.

Although local creeks are expected to crest today, additional flooding is not expected says Kay County Emergency Management Director Pat Zehr.

“The water is going down slowly and hopefully, without any more rainfall, we’ll get back to normal soon, “Zehr said. “However drivers should remain cautious and are reminded not to ever drive into high water.”

Only five days into October, rainfall for the month has been recorded at 8.81 inches, a fourth of the normal amount for the entire year.

The murder trial of a 20-year-old Ponca City man, accused in the death of toddler, has been set.

James Parker will face a jury of his peers Feb. 2 in district court in Newkirk for the murder of 13-month-old Adam Edward Allie.

Allie died three days after choking on bread while in the care of Parker, the boyfriend of the child’s mother.

On July 27, Allie was taken by ambulance to St. Joseph Regional Medical Center after Parker called 911.

The child was taken by helicopter to Children’s Hospital in Oklahoma City where he later died.

Parker, whose request for bond was denied, remains in the Kay County jail. A bond hearing is set for Oct. 8.

Wildcat Harriers Look to Regional

STILLWATER — The Ponca City Wildcat harriers continued to make impressive strides, Saturday, competing alongside a number of Top-10 state teams in the OSU Jamboree.

Though both Ponca City teams finished near the bottom of the 10-team field, according to coach Kelly Chaney, those results don’t tell the whole story.

“These were all top-10 teams, and we’re not that far behind them,” he says. “And we’ve been experimenting, moving people in and out of the varsity so we’ll be sure to have our best runners in there for Regionals. I think we’re going to come out of nowhere and surprise some people.

“But we still have some improving to do. These next few weeks we’re going to have some tongues hanging out at practice.”

Chaney notes that most of his runners took anywhere from a few seconds to over five minutes off of their times from a week ago. Also, with the addition of Poncans’ No. 2 varsity runner, Chris Buck (National Guard training), the Varsity Boys’ finish would have likely been 6th or 7th.

The harriers will compete in the conference meet Oct. 14, followed by the Regional Meet in Tulsa’s Mohawk Park, Oct. 24.

PC Milan Wins Two Straight

Ponca City Milan, a summer and fall soccer team composed of Po-Hi players, won two impressive match ups over the weekend to even their fall record at 2-2.

Playing at the Ponca City Soccer Complex on Saturday, Milan blasted the Oklahoma City Royals, 5-2. According to Milan coach Marco Castillo, the Royals are composed of the top high school players in the Oklahoma City area. For the Poncans, Brett Skaggs and Paul Broome had two goals apiece, while DJ Scarborough added another. Jeremy Cox was credited with two assists.

On Sunday, playing in Edmond, Milan rolled over Edmond Select, a team of elite players from Edmond Memorial High School, 3-1. In that game Scarborough, Skaggs and Jacob Daniel had a goal apiece, while praised the stepped up defense by Dick Engle and goalie Matt Morris for making a difference in the game.

“I was pleased with our intensity,” said Castillo. “ They did a great job of coming back after those first two losses, and that’s the character of this team. When they play with heart they’re unbeatable.”

Milan has next weekend off before going back into action Oct. 24.
