Po-Hi Ochestra Concert Features Tulsa Professor

Julie Bellatti, professor of piano at Tulsa Community College, will be the featured soloist with the Ponca City Senior High Orchestra, Tuesday, in the Howell Auditorium. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. under the direction of Jeff Fox, and is free and open to the public.

Miss Bellatti will be accompanied by the orchestra in her performance of the Brandenburg Concerto Number 5. Other selections for the Tuesday evening concert will include "The Simple Symphony," by Benjamin Britten, "Serenade for Strings" by Edward Elgar and "Souvenir De Florence" by Peter Tchaikovsky.

Miss Bellatti is an adjunct professor of piano and music theory at Tulsa Community College. Past performances have included appearances with the Bartlesville Symphony Orchestra, Tulsa Musicians Orchestra and the University of Tulsa Symphony Orchestra.

Bellatti is a founding member of the Amadeus Piano Festival, where she actively serves as instructor of music theory, guest performer and publicity director.

In addition to the announcement of the upcoming concert, Fox, director of the Ponca City Senior High Orchestra also announced the results of the most recent competition by Ponca City Senior High School Orchestra students. In a recent Regional Honor Orchestra audition, 22 Ponca City High School students earned a position with the select ensemble. "With that number Ponca City will represent 25 percent of the entire orchestra," Fox said.

 

Oo-Kee-Hee Fall Powwow Set Saturday

The 1997 Oo-Kee-Hee Fall Powwow will be Saturday at the Ponca Tribal Cultural Center.

The agenda is: 2 p.m., Gourd Dance; 5:30 p.m., supper break; 6:30 p.m., parade-in; 7:30 p.m., round dance/intertribal; 8 p.m. contest.

The contest will include tiny tot (K and under); elementary, 1-6 years; teen 7-12 years; cloth and buckskin; jingle and fancy shawl; fancy and grass; traditional and straight. Awards will be given for first, second and third place. All contestants are required to participate in the parade-in.

Bethany Roughface is the 1997-98 Oo-Kee-Hee princess. Among those assisting will be Thomas Roughface, emcee; Steven Littlecook, head singer; Brandon Buffalohead, head male dancer; Allison Primeaux, head lady dancer; Kirby Feathers, arena director; Lonnie Others, water boy; Tyrone and Donna Poore, cooks.

Emma Lee Moseley

Emma Lee Moseley, long time resident of Ponca City, died Saturday afternoon, Oct. 18, 1997 at the Ponca City Nursing Home. She had just reached 84 years of age the day of her death.

The funeral service will be held in the sanctuary of the First Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, 1997. Pastor Hance Dilbeck will preside over the services, assisted by the Rev. Larry Heslip. Burial will be at the Longwood Cemetery under the direction of Grace Memorial Chapel.

Emma Lee Finch was born Oct. 18, 1913 at Columbia, Tenn., the daughter of Thomas Finch and Alma (Puckett) Finch. She received her early schooling in Columbia. She then attended and graduated from Carson-Newman College, Jefferson City, Tenn. in 1936. She was united in marriage to Evans Taylor Moseley on Sept. 20,1938 at Columbia, Tenn., with the couple making their first home at Beaver Dam, Ky.

Mrs. Moseley was a school teacher and had taught at Spring Hill, Tenn., before moving to Ponca City in 1954. The couple moved to Shawnee in 1964, at which time she taught at the Varnum High School, returning to Ponca City in 1968. She then taught at East Junior High School. Mrs. Moseley's enjoyments included flower gardening, sewing and oil painting.

She is survived by her husband, Dr. Evans T. Moseley of the home; two sons, William Finch Moseley of Houston, Texas and Thomas Evans Moseley of Alton, Ill.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Mary Lou Grimmitt.

Casket bearers will be Lanny Officer, Byron Moore, Bob McCartney, Danny Goldman, Dawson Smith and Dr. Don Potter.

Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Mrs. Moseley to the Ponca City Art Association, in care of Donna Secrest, P.O. Box 1394, Ponca City, OK 74602.

The family will be at 1600 Cedar.

 

Louise Juliana Sophia Siegert

BLACKWELL - Louise Juliana Sophia Siegert, long time resident of Blackwell, died at 1:15 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, 1997 in the Hillcrest Manor Nursing Home. She was 100.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, in the First Presbyterian Church of Blackwell with the Rev. Geoffrey Pfaff, pastor of the church, officiating. Burial will be in Blackwell Cemetery under direction of Hackler Funeral Home, Blackwell.

Louise Juliana Sophia Siegert was born Nov. 3, 1896 in Dwight, Ill. She was the daughter of Henry Edward and Katherine Adelaide (Foersterling) Siegert. She came to Blackwell in 1910 with her family and received her education in Blackwell. She was employed for many years as a secretary at International Multi-foods.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and Order of Eastern Star.

Louise was never married. She is survived by a niece, JoAnn Nave of Alvin, Texas. Preceding her in death were two sisters, Esta B. Van Marter and Ruth Regina Nave, also a brother, Edward Carl Siegert.

Floy Coe Abbott

Floy Coe Abbott, long time resident of Ponca City, died Friday evening, Oct. 17, 1997 at Westminster Village Care Center. She was 91 years of age.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, 1997 at the First Baptist Church Chapel. The Rev. Hance Dilbeck will preside over the services, assisted by the Rev. Larry Heslip. Interment will be at the Resthaven Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Grace Memorial Chapel.

Floy Coe was born Oct. 11, 1906 at Overbrook (Indian Territory), Okla., the daughter of W.D. Coe and Cora (Nolen) Coe. She attended school through the 9th grade at Overbrook, after which time the family moved to Ardmore, Okla. She graduated from Ardmore High School in 1924. She was married to A.F. (Jack) Abbott with the couple living in several locations before moving to Ponca City in 1950. Mrs. Abbott at one time had worked at Mark's Ladies Dress Shop of Ponca City. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and in earlier years was very active, serving as a nursery teacher for several years, singing in the Silvertones choir and member of the Naomi Sunday School Class. Her enjoyments included gardening, ceramics, shopping and cooking for others. She also enjoyed helping children at The Opportunity Center. Mrs. Abbott was well known for her sense of humor and kindness to others.

She is survived by one daughter, Cleta Yeatts of Ardmore; two sons, Ambassador S.L. Abbott, Coronado, Calif. and Bill Abbott of Knoxville, Tenn.; one sister, Elvis Dustin, Gainesville, Texas; eight grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; also several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Jack in November of 1980; three brothers, Arba Coe, Clint Coe, and Royce Coe, and two sisters, Mae Miller and Fern Johns.

Casket bearers will be Dwight Beck, Dean Coleman, Charles Keltner, Don Clinton, C.D. Northcutt, and Wallace Weaver. Honorary casket bearers will be John McAbee, Bill Green, Fred Smith, and Herbert Allen.

Marvin J. Liberton, rural Ponca City, died at his home Sunday, Oct. 19, 1997. He was 61.

Funeral arrangements are pending with Grace Memorial Chapel, and will be announced later.

Water Garden Meeting - Pond Construction is the topic for the next Water Garden meeting Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Cann Gardens.

Vandalism - At 6:47 a.m. Saturday a man in the 900 block of East Grand Avenue reported that someone had thrown a rock through his apartment window. An officer was assigned.

Vandalism - A man in the 3100 block of Meadow Lane reported to police at 10:02 a.m. Saturday that someone had thrown a hammer through the window of his vehicle. An officer was assigned and a report was taken.

Auto Burglary - At 1:08 p.m. Saturday an auto burglary was reported in the 3200 block of North Fourteenth Street. An officer was assigned and a report was taken.

Assault - At 3:50 p.m. Saturday a woman in the 300 block of Elm Street reported that she had been assaulted. An officer was assigned and a report was taken.

Arrest - Police arrested a 38-year-old female at 6:27 p.m. Saturday for interfering with an officer, assaulting an officer and public intoxication.

Accident - Police received a call at 7:54 p.m. Saturday regarding a two vehicle accident in the 1100 block of East Prospect Avenue. An officer was assigned and a report was taken.

Burglary - At 11:29 p.m. Saturday police received a call from a resident in the 700 block of East Grand Avenue reporting a burglary. Police took a grand larceny report.

Arrest - A 38-year-old man was arrested at 11:29 p.m. Saturday on three city warrants and for public intoxication.

Curfew Violation - At 11:54 p.m. Saturday police picked up two juveniles in violation of curfew in the 200 block of East Highland Avenue.

Attack - St. Joseph Regional Medical Center personnel contacted police at 11:54 p.m. Saturday regarding a 16-year-old that was being treated for injuries reportedly received when he was attacked at a park on Ash Street. An officer was assigned and a report was taken.

Arrest - Police arrested a 19-year-old man at 1:18 a.m. Sunday from the 1400 block of West Highland Avenue for driving under suspension and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Arrest - A 35-year-old man was arrested at 2:05 a.m. Sunday from Edwards Avenue and Fourteenth Street for driving under the influence and speeding.

Arrest - At 4:26 a.m. Sunday police arrested a 40-year-old woman from the 300 block of South Ash Street for driving left of center, no insurance, driving under the influence and driving under suspension.

Halloween Vandalism - At 4:32 a.m. Sunday police received a call from a resident in the 600 block of East Detroit Avenue reporting the vandalism of Halloween decorations. An officer was assigned and a report was taken.

Vandalism - A man in the 2200 block of Kyme Drive reported to police at 8:32 a.m. Sunday that his yard light had been damaged. An officer was assigned and a report was taken.

Yard Vandalism - A woman in the 2600 block of Mockingbird Lane reported to police at 8:56 a.m. Sunday that her yard had been vandalized. An officer was assigned and a report was taken.

Decoration Theft - A man in the 900 block of North Elm Street reported to police at 9:41 a.m. Sunday that some Halloween decorations had been stolen from his yard. An officer was assigned and a report was taken.

Business Burglarized - Police received a report at 9:43 a.m. Sunday that Dodson Auto Sales, 300 North First Street, had been burglarized. An officer was assigned and a report was taken.

Tires Slashed - A man in the 800 block of South Second Street reported to police at 10:12 a.m. Sunday that several tires had been slashed. An officer was assigned and a report was taken.

Burglary - Police received a call at 10:28 a.m. Sunday reporting a burglary at Houser Construction, 220 North First Street. An officer was assigned and a report was taken.

Stolen Decorations - A woman in the 100 block of Glenside Avenue reported to police at 10:48 a.m. Sunday that someone had stolen her Halloween decorations. An officer was assigned and a report was taken.

Vandalism - At 11:08 a.m. Sunday a man in the 2300 block of Glenmore Place reported vandalism to Halloween decorations.

Stolen Bike - At 12:48 p.m. Sunday a resident in the 300 block of South Lake Street reported a bicycle stolen. An officer was assigned and a report was taken.

Decorations Stolen - A resident in the 1400 block of Academy Road reported to police at 3:59 p.m. Sunday that Halloween ornaments had been stolen from the yard.

Arrest - Police arrested a 21-year-old man at 5 p.m. Sunday on a city warrant for failure to appear, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, running a stop sign, driving under suspension, no insurance, no seat belt and on six Kay County warrants.

Stolen Pumpkins - A woman in the 2100 block of Ashley Place reported at 5:40 p.m. Sunday that her pumpkins were stolen from her residence. And at 6:39 p.m. Sunday a woman in the 500 block of Virginia Avenue also reported the theft of pumpkins from her residence.

Stolen Bike - A man reported at 12:36 a.m. Monday that his bicycle had been stolen from the 200 block of West Hartford Avenue. An officer was assigned and a report was taken.

Couple United in Marriage In Methodist Church Rites

Betty J. Warren and William K. Wright were married Sept. 27, 1997 in the First United Methodist Church sanctuary with the Rev. Denny Hook officiating. Attendants were the bride's daughter-in-law, Joan Rudolph of Claremore, and Conrad Evans of Stillwater.

Among the guests attending were his son, Gregory Wright and Sharon Wallace of Houston, Texas, and Joy Evans of Stillwater.

Mr. and Mrs. Wright reside at 300 South Pine. They are planning a cruise later this year.

 

Pearl Webber Celebrates 94th Birthday

Pearl Webber, 140 Elmwood, celebrated her 94th birthday Oct. 15. She has been a Ponca City resident for 61 years. The daughter of Cora Belle and Arthur Duncan, she was born Oct. 15, 1903 in Enid.

Pearl and her husband, the now deceased A. E. Webber, were owners of Webber Wholesale. Mrs. Webber has six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Helping her celebrate the special occasion were her daughters: Priscilla Langham of Pawhuska, Dixie Ambrose of Spring, Texas and Billie Hogan of Ponca City.

Richard Ambrose of Spring, Texas, a son-in-law, sent her nine red roses and four baskets of Fall flowers and a poem.

 

Marriage Plans Announced

Glad Tiding Assembly of God church will be the setting Nov. 7 for the wedding of Janell Lea Hawkins and Richard Steven Rhynard. Parents of the couple are Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Hawkins, 809 South Third, and Mr. and Mrs. Richard Rhynard, 1417 South Sixth.

Miss Hawkins is a senior at Ponca City High School and Rhynard, a 1997 Po-Hi graduate, is employed at Albertson's Warehouse.

 

Eta Zeta Chapter Names Plans

The Oct. 8 meeting of Eta Zeta Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi sorority was held at the home of Cynthia Wilson. There were nine members present and three guests, Gayla Gelvin, Deanna Carter and Natalie Nelson.

Lori Hambleton gave the treasurer's report and Debra Bellmard gave the City Council report. Announcement was made that chapter member Krista Harbeson would emcee a "Wacky Style Show" at the Preferential Tea Nov. 17 at the Conoco Fourth Street Clubhouse. Eta Zeta will provide appetizers for the event.

Kelly Trotter, social chairperson, announced the "Outgoing President Party" for Ms. Harbeson would be Oct. 18 with a girls night out, dinner and a movie. A Halloween party for the families will be Oct. 30 in the Wilson home.

The service project for November will be chapter members serving as ushers at the Ponca Playhouse. Members of the Ways and Means committee reported on the success of the Oktoberfest food booth. The next meeting of the chapter will be Oct. 22 in the Trotter home.

 

Desk & Derrick Convention Topic for Club

The Ponca City Desk and Derrick Club met recently at the Conoco Fourth Street Clubhouse. Hostesses were Joyce Johnson, June Jeffries and Norma Buffalow. Mary Faken gave the devotional.

Ms. Buffalow announced that invitations had been received for the Bartlesville Desk and Derrick Industry Appreciation luncheon, the Liberal, Kan. luncheon, Wichita, Kan. industry event and the Enid club for the Commission on Marginally Producing Oil and Gas Wells Trade Fair.

Phyllis Kennedy gave a report of the ADDC convention held in Calgary, Canada in September. She said one of the highlights was a presentation of colors by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. There were 475 people from 78 clubs attending the convention. Eunice Spencer from the Houston Desk and Derrick Club was honored for having attended all 46 conventions.

Announcement was made that the 1998 convention would be in Minneapolis, Minn., the 1999 event in Edmonton, Canada and the 2000 convention in Wichita, Kan.

The Nov. 10 meeting of the Ponca City Desk and Derrick Club will be at 6 p.m. at the Conoco Fourth Street Clubhouse. During the Dec. 2 meeting of the group at the Ponca City Country Club an exchange of Christmas ornaments will be conducted.

 

Busy Bee Club Members Meet

Members of the Busy Bee Club met Oct. 15 with Helen Taylor, 1308 Donahoe. Beulah McCartney presided at the meeting and members gave the salute to the flag and said the Lord's Prayer. Helen Taylor's devotion was "Pack Up Your Troubles" by Ted Malone.

Members answered roll call with "something to share." Helen Hiskett gave the treasurer's report and members were asked to bring food for the Thanksgiving dinner at the Mission on South Avenue to the next meeting. Articles were brought for donation to the Child Development Center and members were reminded to save Betty Crocker coupons and UPC bar codes from Best Yet and Rainbow, and other items.

Games were played with prizes going to Helen Hiskett and Ruby Harvey. The mystery gift was won by Ms. McCartney. The next meeting will be Nov. 5 with Vivian Davis as hostess.
