Local Woman Dies When Car Goes Into River

The body of a 22-year-old Ponca City woman was recovered this morning from the waters of the Arkansas River into which the car she was driving plunged about 12:40 a.m. Sunday.

Casey Michelle Webb, daughter of Daryl and Trisha Cox, 34 Raintree, was alone in the 1995 Nissan Maxima southbound on Pecan Road. The vehicle failed to negotiate a sharp turn to the west and ran down a fairly steep bank into the river, according to the report of Ponca City Highway Patrol trooper Steve Warlick.

Warlick was assisted by Trooper Mark Cranford in the investigation. Personnel from the Kay County sheriff's office, Ponca City Police and Fire departments, the Oklahoma Lake Patrol and several local volunteers also aided in the search for the driver following the accident.

Water was being discharged through the dam at Kaw Lake and there was a fairly swift current in the river. The vehicle was pulled from the water by a wrecker about 125 feet downstream from where it entered the river. The driver was ejected from the car, whose front windows were rolled down. Her seat belt apparently was not in use.

the Corps of Engineers halted the water flow from the lake Sunday afternoon as the search for the driver's body continued until nearly dark. The water level was down by this morning and divers located the body about 7:45 a.m.

Keating-Coatney Show How to Play

By FRED HILTON
News Sports Editor

Monte Keating and Cal Coatney gave out lessons in how to play scramble golf this weekend, leading from start to finish in the annual Labor Day Tournament.

"We played just the way you would map it out," Coatney said. "We got birdies on all the holes you figure to get birdies on. We didn't come close to making a bogey."

Keating an Coatney had nine birdies in each round of the two-day tournament, finishing with a 124 total, five stroke ahead of Pete Hainline and Craig Toy. Ponca Citians Jerry and Casey Orr were one stroke back at 130 to take third in a tie breaker.

"We both played real well," Coatney said of the duo's win. "There was nothing spectacular. We just made all the shots we were suppose to make and we helped each other out real well.

"We've played together a long time so each of us know what the other is going to do. It just happened that we were on for both days. That's unusual. Sometimes you have a good round and its hard to follow it up the next day."

Keating and Coatney got off to a solid start, birding the first five holes they played in the first round Saturday. Staked to that confidence-builder, they sailed in with a one-stroke lead over the visiting team of McAllester and Martin.

On the second day, they again birdies No. 1, then picked up birdies on 5 and 6.

As the day grew on, their nearest competitors fell away and none of the chargers could match their second round score.

"We've played in this tournament several times," Coatney said. "But this is the first time we've won it. It's the first time we've played this well."

John Clark and Phil Carey ran off with the A Flight title, finishing with a 123 total, 10 strokes in front of Ron Colberg and Jake Ewing who tied with Mike Hunsaker and Stewart Cales.

Junior Dixon had a tougher fight in B Flight, holding off David Carroll and Doug Stearns by one stroke (134-135). Jim Cook and Jerry Ricke were third at 136.

Ron Brazeil and Alex McCalmont also had a battle in C flight posting a 136 to edge out R.L. Tooman and Bryant Hearon, who tied at 127 with Steve Frick and Dan Sims.

George Mefford and Barry Roller won D flight with a 141, two strokes better than Russell Vassar and Terrill Simmons. Jim Armstrong and J.R. Fowler were third at 147.
