C-C Champ Has Busy Weekend

Bruce Newman had a busy weekend. He teamed with J.B. Hron to win the Ponca
City County Club Fourball Matchplay Championship then joined Tommy Green
to tie for seventh place in the tough Wentz Labor Day Tournament,
Newman played a total of 52 holes in two days.
"It takes an understanding spouse," Newman said of his marathon
golf weekend.
First he and Green played 18 holes in the first round of the Labor Day
Scramble on Saturday, firing a handicapped 67. Then he hurried over to the
country club for a 2 p.m. tee time as he and Hron took on Jerry and Casey
Orr in the fourball finals.
Newman actually got a little help from a rain storm that moved through the
area about 2:30.
"We got in a couple of holes before the rains hit, We waited around
for about and hour and got in another three holes before it started to
rain again and we decided to quit then," Newman recalls. His team was
up one hole at that point
Actually, the foursome was on the green of the fifth holes when the rains
came again. They marked their balls and decided to finish on Sunday.
But first, Newman had to play the second round of the Labor Day tournament
in the morning, where he and Green shot a 6 posting a 131 total.
In the afternoon he returned to the country club to finish the championship
round.
"The Orrs were very gracious to let me do this," Newman said.
"They were very accommodating in letting us play in the afternoon.
Newman and Hron managed to half the fifth and sixth holes against the Orr
father and son combo. But they bogied No. 7 to go back even.
"We got a couple of birdies on 8 and 11 to go two up," Newman
said. "Then Jerry birdied 12 and we were back to one up. They (the
Orrs) bogied No. 13 and J.B. sank his par to put up back 2-up.
"J.B Got another birdie on 14 to put us up three. We halved 15 and
then Jerry just missed a four-foot put of a bird on 16. We managed to half
that hole for the win.
"The match was much closer that the score indicates. Jerry just missed
several birdie putt that would have extended the match. Casey played real
well. He made three or four important putts. He showed a lot of maturity
for a young player.
"Just like when we won this tournament the last time, J.B. got hot
on the late holes and won it for us."

Long-Hitting Kansans Win Wentz Labor Day

Steve and Cory Kinzie got together for a rare two rounds of golf and did
very well thank you in annual Wentz Labor Day Scramble.
"It's been a couple of months since I picked up a club and I'm sure
it was the same for Cory," Steve said.
There wasn't much rustiness there as the two teamed for a 60-64-124 total.
Unfortunately, the ran into a couple of Kansas "buzz saws."
Mike McCaffey and Troy Dossey, who play out of the Winfield Country Club,
scorched the municipal course with a 59-60-119 to grab off first place
in the two-day tournament.
"Those guys could hit it a mile," Kinzie marveled. "I've
played golf all over the world, against some pretty good golfers. But I've
never seen any hit the ball like McCaffey does. Those two were hitting driver,
6-iron to reach the greens on No. 9 and 16. Those are par 5 holes.
"And they weren't hitting them a bit off line. They were putting for
four eagles. Usually, if a golfer is having a very good day and hitting
the ball well, he might be putting twice for eagles.
"We started the day just one stroke back, but they barbecued us."
Another pair of Poncans, John Clark and Phil Carey had what turned out to
be relatively good round, posting a 64-61-125 to finish third, tied with
Pat LeValley and Ron Rush, who had identical rounds of 64-61.
Jerry and Harry Ricke won the A Flight title in a playoff with S.J. Brythe
and John Free. The Rickes had 65-69-134, Blythe and Free 66-68-134.
Ed and Doug Davis survived a four-way tie in B Flight. They had 65-70-135
while Chick Bussey and Bobby Jack had 68-68, Bryant Hearon and Mark Hill
71-65 and Dick Hankins and Joe Hager 67-69.
Bill Wright and Mike Keating won C flight with 72-68-140, edging Chris Corral
and John DeJarnett by two strokes, Carl Reutter and Dale Sligar won D flight
with 73-73-146.
Cats Make Changes, Name QB
By FRED HILTON

As the Wildcats started final preparation for the season opener head football
coach Rick Sodowsky and his staff made some promised personnel changes on
defense.
But perhaps the biggest news to come out of a long weekend of work was the
naming of sophomore Eric Michael as the starting quarterback when the Cats
play Tulsa East Central here Friday.
"The thing that did it for me," Sodowsky said of the selection,
"was Eric's play against Westmoore (the final scrimmage last Thursday).
He threw the ball well and did a great job of leading the team. He just
executed well."
That will leave senior Chad Taylor as the backup quarterback and full time
strong safety. He will be in fast company in the Wildcat secondary.
Sodowsky has decided to work Dennis Shields at free safety. That will put
Anthony Tillman, Marc Smith and blue chip prospect Marlon Guess with Shields
to cover receivers.
"They all have very good speed," Sodowsky noted.
The coaches have also made some tentative changes in the defensive front.
"We want to see how it works in practice," Sodowsky said "But
were thinking about moving Corey Burkett back to nose guard, put Robert
Warrior at right tackle, to back up David Newman and move Steve Bogadi up
to left tackle. That will keep Newman and (Aaron) Kreger from being on the
field all the time.
"All of these players are pretty interchangeable. With our system,
its pretty easy for them to change positions."
The changes reflect some of the worries the coaches had coming out of the
Westmoore scrimmage.
"It was a learning experience and an eye opener for the players and
me," secondary coach Jerry Hill said. "I'll take the responsibility
for the mistakes we made, but they wont happen again. Were going to make
sure in drills that receivers don't get behind us. Westmoore's receivers
had good speed and the were able to throw over our heads. That's my fault
and we will definitely work on that this week.
"The trouble is that the kids did some good things against Westmoore.
They were just overshadowed by the big plays."
Offensive coordinator Terry Henderson had some mixed emotions after the
scrimmage. He noted that Michael hit on three of five passes for 30 yards
and that the running game looked better on film than it did Thursday night.
"The first team had 93 yards on 23 carries," Henderson said. "When
we can average over four yards a carry Ill take it. On that first drive
for a touchdown, we overcame three penalties in 21 plays.
"Dennis (Shields) and Billy (Swygert) did a good job at tailback, We
are starting to get the kind of fullback play we want. (Chance) Throop is
doing a good job and Jay Bentley will go get you.
"I was disappointed we were not consistent and that the second unit
did not move the ball well. That doesn't set well with an old man.
"If you call throwing five passes working on the passing game, I guess
we did. Tillman had a big catch, He really went up and got it.
"But we have to find a way the get the ball to (tight end Ryan) Treadway.
He has too soft of hands and is a big target out there not to be using
him more."
