County Road To Be Repaved

OKLAHOMA CITY — A contract to repave a portion of a rural Kay County road halfway between Tonkawa and Blackwell was awarded Monday to an area company.

According to the Oklahoma Department of Transportation, east/west County Road 18, better known as Hubbard Road, will be resurfaced with asphalt from four miles north of the junction of U.S. 60 and Interstate 35 easterly for 5.3 miles.

County Commissioner Rex Purdy said nine miles of Hubbard Road leading to Ponca City were resurfaced about two years ago. The remainder of the two-lane asphalt road is so badly in need of repair it can no longer be patched, Purdy said.

Rep. Jim Reese, R-Nardin, said the state Transportation Commission awarded a $379,914 contract on the paving project to Evans & Associates Construction Co. The Ponca City firm was the lower of two bidders for the job, said Sen. Paul Muegge, D-Tonkawa.

The work is expected to start in six to eight weeks and will require about a month to complete, the Transportation Department estimated.

Chamber Chairman Rallying Community Against Problems

By PATTI PFEIFFER

News Staff Writer

Last week’s Chamber of Commerce meeting was more of a “pep rally,” presenting an opportunity for chairman Richard Severance to rally the troops and unite for a common cause.

“There has been too much focus on the differences and we now need to focus on the commons,” Severance said during the chairman’s report. “We rally around projects such as Standing Bear and the Poncan Theatre, but I wish I knew how to rally a community around itself.” He also encouraged unity and continued community-wide communication from and through Chamber members.

Committees reports were presented during the meeting. The Organization and Membership Development Committee reported that the Ambassadors Committee has prepared for the next Business After Hours which is set for Tuesday, Aug. 11 at Cassie’s from 5 to 7 p.m. It was also reported that the Presidents Club Committee attended a ribbon cutting on July 9 for Affordable Carpet and that the Outstanding Citizens Committee held its annual social and dinner July 30. At that time the members determined what charities they would be supporting this year.

The Government Affairs Committee chairman stated that the next Second Friday Forum was set for Aug. 14. The forum will focus on the two primary elections on Tuesday, Aug. 25. Candidates from both elections will be invited to attend. The committee scheduled the candidates for county officials and judicial elections for the September forum and the state officials for October.

The Infrastructure Committee received reports on the U.S. 177 South issue, U.S. 77 North project and the beautification of entrances into Ponca City. The committee is addressing the need for signs on I-35 and the Cimarron Turnpike noting the location of Ponca City.

During the Business and Community Development Committee report it was stated that the Education Committee was continuing to evaluate and review the Partners In Education (PIE) and Slice of the PIE Programs. Two additional corporations have agreed to become partners — Lowe’s has agreed to be a partner with the Mid High and Evans and Associates Enterprises Inc. has agreed to assist Oklahoma Natural Gas and Lincoln Elementary in their partnership.

The “Give Ponca the Business” Committee was focusing on its upcoming Christmas Promotion. The committee was presented with the idea of a community-wide giveaway during the holiday season. The package is still in the defining stages, but has been well received by Ponca Plaza Merchants Association and the Main Street Authority. The committee also reviewed the Breakfast of Champions (BOC) evaluations. It was reported that evaluations were very good and the next BOC is now being planned.

The Health and Medical issues sub-committee continues to plan for its upcoming Health Fair set for Sept. 9 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center. Issues to be addressed include teen pregnancy, suicide and drug testing. During the Leadership Ponca City report it was noted that the application deadline had passed and applications were currently under review.
