From the pages of The Ponca City News, Monday, July 6, 1998 LOCALDrilling Effort Comes Up Dry Drilling Effort Comes Up DryBy PATTI PFEIFFER News Staff Writer After thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours the oil exploration on the outskirts of Ponca City is complete and with less than favorable results. The words dry hole an oilmans biggest fear and an investors worst nightmare were mumbled early Sunday morning as the drill bit reached its targeted depth of 4,000 feet. The team of investors, geologists and engineers gathered to determine what if any would be the next step in their search for the ultimate oil well. We may be down but we are certainly not out, said John Warren, president of the exploration company, The Warren Corporation. You cant win the game unless you suit up and in this business suiting up is sometimes costly and always risky. It was almost two weeks ago today that several tractor trailer trucks hauled the huge drilling machinery and its components into the town. The 100-foot derrick and rig were then constructed on the northeast corner of the Conoco refinery near South Avenue and Fourth Street. It was the first time since 1906 that permission had been granted for possible directional drilling underneath the city limits. In preparation of drilling and in anticipation of finding oil, the Warren Corporation leased more than 2,000 acres from the City of Ponca City, the Ponca City School Board and local residents. Although barrels of oil didnt not spring forth, Warren says this effort was not a complete loss. Except for drilling a dry hole this has been a wonderful experience for us all. The people of have been so supportive and interested in our progress and Conoco and their employees have been instrumental in helping us make a complicated drilling operation trouble-free, Warren said. It was such a promising geological prospect, we would do it all over again. And doing it all over again they just may, as other options are currently being discussed by Warren and his team among them the possibility of yet another local drilling site. No Surprises As Local Filing BeginsBy MARK GALVIN News Staff Writer There were no surprises yet today, as filings began for city, county and state elective offices. As of this morning, there were no takers yet for a vacant city commission post in Ponca City. Kay County Election Board secretary Carol Stafford in Newkirk reported at noon that most of the county filing activity had come from incumbents seeking reelection and all the filing occurred shortly after the office opened at 8 a.m. Republican incumbent County Commissioner Dee Schieber of District One filed for reelection. Also filing for the post was a Democrat challenger, James Powelson, who had already announced he would run. Other county officers filing for reelection this morning were County Assessor Tresa Engle, County Treasurer Pat Schieber and District Three County Commissioner Rex Purdy. No other county office is up for election this year. Meanwhile, in Oklahoma City, David Myers of Ponca City filed for the District 20 State Senate seat. Myers is challenging incumbent Paul Muegge (D-Tonkawa), who has yet to file. In House District 38, incumbent Jim Reese (R-Nardin) filed for reelection while in District 36 Helen Johnson Christenson (D-Pawhuska) filed for the vacancy left when James Hager decline to run so he can be a Democrat candidate for governor. Incumbents Jim Newport (R-Ponca City) in House District 37, Muegge in Senate District 20, and J. Berry Harrison (D-Fairfax) in Senate District 10 are expected to file for reelection. The state election board in Oklahoma City also reported that the two incumbent judges for the Eighth Judicial District, which comprises Kay and Noble counties, had filed this morning. Both District Judge D.W. Boyd making his first election bid since his appointment in 1996, and Associate District Judge Leslie D. Page bidding again for the post he has held since 1990 had already announced publicly they would file. Not yet filing at the state office was District Attorney John Maddox, who publicly announced last month that he would seek a second term. SPORTSMonday Evening Quarterback - Archers Sponsor Club Member Monday Evening Quarterback - Archers Sponsor Club Memberby FRED HILTON News Sports Editor Archers, for the most part, are a different breed. They like to test their skills the old fashion way. While modern bows are far from old fashion and a number of local young archers are making waves in state events. The Ponca City Bowmen still believe in helping their own, The Ponca Bowman are using this months shoot at the Lake Ponca Archery Range as a way to come to the aid of fellow member Dale Hicks and his family. Hicks house burn down last month and the family lost all its possessions. While it may be ironic that Hicks is a deputy fire chief for the city, it is none-the-less serious to have to start over from scratch. So the club is taking donations ($10) from participants in this months event for the Hicks family. The shoot is scheduled for Sunday and will include 30 3D targets, a lone shot contest and a quick shooting contest. Participants can start signing in at 8 a.m. Between 50 and 75 archers from Oklahoma and southern Kansas are expected, according to Nick Morris, who is helping organize the benefit shoot. Dale has been a member of the Ponca City Bowmen for some time and has done a lot for the club, Morris said. We thought this time the club should do something for Dale. The Ponca City Bowmen are a long-standing organization. In fact, current members have a hard time remembering when the club was first formed. The group has about 60 members now who hold shoots at the archery range on East Lake Ponca just off L.A. Cann Drive once a month. These shoots are for archers of all caliber from those who are in major competitions to novices, Morris said. Four of its younger members have metaled in the Sooner State Games. Brian Yandell and Josh Kelly won the gold and silver in the latest game, following in the path of Brad and Matt Dexter. But not only the youngsters are adapt with bow and arrow. Members Doug Hill and Max Horn also carry the club banner to other shoots in the area. But on Sunday the group will be shooting for a different kind of medal. PC Legion Explodes FinallyBy MATTHEW KOENIG News Sports Writer BARTLESVILLE A strange bunch, this American Legion majors team. After finishing way out of contention in pool play with a 0-3 record, the Royals went ballistic on Sunday morning, picking up 16 hits to vent their collective frustration on Park View, Kansas, 16-1, in five innings. The win good for seventh place also keeps the Royals out of last place in the Glen Winget Memorial Tournament, and caps off a four game slide. The majors are now 15-20 on the season. With multiple hits from five in the line up and a single hit from all but one, the game was never close. Toby Red Leaf also continued what has been a 3-game string of fine outings by Ponca City pitchers, giving up just two hits and two walks while striking out six. The Royals defense after committing 15 errors through three games woke up as well, giving up just two errors. In a 5-run first inning, catcher Jerrod Spears got things started with a single, and left fielder Marc Smith followed with a double to put two in scoring position. Shortstop Justin Thomas then got the Poncans long march across home plate started, driving in both with a two-base rip up the third base line. Thomas then came in with a sacrifice by designated hitter Evan Rupp, and after two base hits by first baseman Dean Hemenway and centerfielder Daniel Denny, right fielder Michael Quick sent in two with a double to the right field wall. In the second inning, another double by Thomas and a single by third baseman Jason Neff put two on, and Rupp was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Hemenway then drew an RBI walk, Denny drove in another with a fielders choice, and Quick again finished the scoring with an RBI single. Again in the third, consecutive base hits by Spears and Smith, followed by a walk to Thomas loaded the bases. Wes Murrie then came through, driving in two with a single to left field, and Thomas came in later on a passed ball. Up 11-0, the Poncans decided to make it ridiculous, scoring five more times. A base hit by Murrie and two hit batters loaded the bases this time, and Denny started the assault with an RBI single to right field. Quick then sent one in on a sacrifice, and second baseman Justin Ross scored another with a single. Denny then came in on an error, while Ross came in on a balk. With a comeback virtually out of the question, Park City did add a run on a Ponca City error to avoid the shutout. For the game, Spears was 2-for-5, Smith was 2-for-4, Thomas was 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs, Murrie was 2-for-3, Denny was 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs, while Quick was a perfect 3-for-3 with 3 RBIs. On Saturday afternoon, the Poncans lost a heartbreaker to Hillcrest, Missouri, 4-3 in nine innings. The Royals had led through five innings but couldnt put the game away. Again, defensive miscues killed the Royals, as they committed four errors to Hillcrests one. Hillcrest also turned what some guessed to be an American Legion record five double plays in the ball game, including one in each of the eighth and ninth innings to end scoring threats by the Royals. Evan Rupp put on a marathon performance on the mound, going all nine innings in the sweltering heat to give up eight hits and just three walks, while striking out four. For the first five innings Rupp was virtually untouchable, giving up just one hit, but got into trouble in the sixth as Hillcrest picked up three consecutive hits and a pair of sacrifices to close within one, 3-2. In the bottom of the seventh, then, Hillcrest added another run on a 2-out RBI single by second baseman Ben Martin to tie the game and force the extra innings. And though the Poncans put a runner on base in each of their at-bats, it was Hillcrest getting the winning run in the bottom of the ninth. A fly out to Red Leaf and a spectacular diving catch by Smith put two quick outs on the scoreboard and it appeared the game would be going to a tenth inning. But a single stretched into a double by lead off hitter Chris Covey, followed by a Ponca City error to send him on to third, brought up shortstop Lee Dishman. Dishman wasted no time with his heroics, either, slicing Rupps second pitch to center field to win the game. Earlier, however, it was the Royals who looked to be in control. In the second inning, Smith got things going with a base hit to center field, and stole second to get into scoring position. After a sacrifice which resulted in a double play, ironically moved him on to third, left fielder Michael Quick put the Poncans on the board with a smashing double to center field. The Royals added two more runs on three hits in the top of the fifth. With two outs and one on base, Spears rapped a shot into right field for a single, and Red Leaf added another to load the bases. Thomas then fired a shot up the middle to send one in safely, and Spears disregarding the stop sign at third slid in under the catchers glove to add another. For the game, Spears was 2-for-3 with a walk, Red Leaf was 2-for-3, while Smith was 3-for-4. The Royals now have a day off before hosting Ark City in a doubleheader, Tuesday, at 6 p.m. Ponca City 16, Park View 1 Park View 000 01 1 2 0 Ponca City 533 05 16 16 2 Red Leaf (w) and Spears; Brown (l), Boyer (3) and Butts. AA Legion SecondBLACKWELL The Ponca City American Legion AA varsity fell in a run-rule to McPherson, Kansas, 13-4, to take second place in the Blackwell Tournament, Sunday. And, if not for the questionable presence of McPhersons 18-year olds playing in a AAA Tournament, the Royals could have possibly taken the tournament title. Consecutive wins on Thursday and Friday, a 10-6 win Saturday against Enid, followed by a 8-0 run-rule loss to McPherson put the Royals into contention for the title on Sunday. With a 4-2 record in the tournament, the Royals are now three games over .500, at 21-18. The Poncans put on a show in their first game on Sunday, squeaking past Mulvane, 3-2, behind RBI singles by Stephen Michael and Jimmo Ozment in the top of the seventh inning. Chad Whitsitt and Wes Day also put on command performances on the mound. Whitsitt started off strong, giving up just one hit through 2 1/3 innings, while striking out three. Day then stole the show in relief, striking out ten of 18 batters while giving up just three hits and walking no one. Down by one run, 2-1, first baseman Chris McCool got things going in the top of the seventh with a base hit, and Michael drove him in with a shot down the first base line. One out later, Michael then scored the winning run, coming in on a two-base blast to left field by Ozment. Ozment was also the only Royal with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. In the Championship match up, then, McPherson effectively put the game away with a 5-hit, 8-run third inning to launch to an 11-1 lead. The Poncans made up a little ground in the fourth, getting three runs on two hits. An RBI bunt by Anthony Stark, and a 2 RBI blast to left field by J. Michael Sharon led to those scores. And though the score was less than impressive to Ponca City fans, Day was again amazing in relief, striking out five in the last two innings while giving up just one hit and a walk. Sharon was the only Royal with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs. On Saturday, after Enid went on top 3-0 in the top of the second, the Royals unloaded with four runs in the bottom of at inning to take the lead. A double by Chase Eads was followed by an Enid error to put two on base, and McCool stepped up by driving them both in with a triple. Michael then came up with an RBI single, and Sharon completed the scoring with an RBI single as well. Enid came right back, however, picking up three more runs in the top of the third to go on top, 6-4. After the Royals added one run by Buddy McCoy in the bottom of that inning, starting pitcher Bryan Coppock picked up the pace, holding Enid hitless in the next two innings. On offense, the Poncans caught fire in the fifth and sixth innings, picking up five more runs on five hits. In the fifth, hits by Eads and Stark, followed by an Enid error that sent both in to score launched the Royals into the lead by one, 7-6. In the sixth, then, Eads got things going again, picking up a 2-out single which was followed by a 2 RBI rip to right field by Todd Stewart. McCool then finished off the scoring by sending in Stewart with a single of his own. Day also worked his magic in that game, going the final two innings with four strikeouts, while giving up just one hit and two walks. For that game, Eads was 3-for-4, Stark was 2-for-3, McCool was 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs, while Michael was 2-for-3 with an RBI. The AA Varsity now has a day off before playing their final game of the regular season, an away game against Shidler. The District Tournament then starts Friday, in Stillwater.
