The draws may have been small, but the action was as hot as the temperature as the Ponca City Open ended a seven day run at the Wally Smith Tennis center Sunday.
The adult brackets for the tournament, which is sponsored by the Ponca City Parks and Recreation Department, were down to five or six per division in most cases. But that did not lessen the amount of talent in those divisions.
The Men's 50 singles lived up to its advanced billing as Richard Perry of Enid, ranked No. 1 in the Oklahoma District of the Missouri Valley Tennis Association, claimed the title Sunday morning.
But it was only after a struggle. Wakita's unranked Jim Elliott tripped up No. 2 ranked Roger Dabney of Oklahoma City in the semifinals in straight sets. Elliott then took Perry to three sets before Perry prevailed, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
There was another three-setter in the last title to be decided Sunday.
In the Men's 4.0 Doubles, Tony Mason of Bartlesville and Warren Tonka of Tulsa outlasted Bob Mason and John Lanning of Bartlesville, 0-6, 7-5, 6-3.
Ponca City's LeeAnn Cavener pulled in the final Ponca City trophy of the tournament as she teamed with Steve Pulley of Newkirk to win the Mixed Doubles crown, 6-2, 6-3, over Julie Creveling and Ted Impson of Ponca City.
The Ponca City Open - and other state tournaments, according to Open officials - has been having trouble filling adult division brackets in the past few years.
"Not as many adults are interested in gaining rankings," Sharmi Williams notes. "But mainly it's because of league play in Tulsa and Oklahoma City. Players there can play every weekend without traveling."
One tournament director in Tulsa holds about 17 tournaments a season, she notes.

ARK CITY, Kan. - The fifth time proved the charm for Blackwell here Sunday as the Aces surprised the Ponca City Majors 3-2 in extra innings at the Ark City American Legion Baseball Tournament.
That loss, Ponca City's first to Blackwell this season, sent the Poncans to the fifth place game later Sunday where they defeated Ark City 6-5.
The split left Ponca City with a 20-10 record and the Royals will now get some needed time off. The Majors next play Thursday when they host Blackwell and Fort Smith, Ark., in a triangular beginning at 4 p.m. Ponca City plays Fort Smith at 4 and then plays Blackwell at 8 p.m. Fort Smith and Blackwell play each other at 6.
On Friday, the Poncans are scheduled to play Fort Smith twice more - at 5 and 7 p.m.
Against Blackwell Sunday morning, Ponca City grabbed an early 2-1 lead with a run in the first and another in the second inning.
J.R. Fry scored the game's first run as he singled and later crossed the plate on a wild pitch. In the second, Chris Koenig led off with a walk and scored on Fry's fielder's choice.
But Blackwell pitcher Matt Dill shut down the Poncans the rest of the way and the Aces pulled out the upset win as they scored the tying run in the fourth against Ponca City starter Matt Holland and got the winning run in the bottom of the eighth against reliever Rocky Hughes.
Hughes (5-4) came on in the seventh and struck out the side, but he also gave up a pair of walks. He opened the eighth with another walk and that one proved costly as back-to-back singles pushed across the game-winner.
Ponca City had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the top of the eighth as Michael Quick led off the frame with a triple. But three consecutive ground outs ended the threat.
Holland pitched well during his time on the mound. He allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits with two walks, three hit batsmen and one strikeout.
Against Ark City, Fry led Ponca City's 14-hit attack with a 4-for-4 game. Marc Smith (2-for-4), Koenig (2-for-4) and Jason Neff (2-for-3) also had multiple hits.
Despite all those hits, the Poncans trailed 5-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh. But the Royals rallied for the victory.
Hughes led off the seventh with a single but was quickly erased on Quick's fielder's choice. After Quick went to second on a passed ball, Jason Ross came through with an RBI single to tie the game at 5-all. Ross stole second and Koenig's single won the game.
Koenig (4-1) also picked up the win in relief of Jay Bentley. Koenig came on in Ark City's three-run sixth after Bentley got in trouble. He gave up a sacrifice bunt and a two-RBI single in the sixth but those runs were charged to Bentley. He gave up one more single in the seventh.
Bentley was touched for five earned runs on 10 hits with three walks and four strikeouts.
Ponca City scored once in the first and third innings and twice in the fourth to lead 4-1 before Ark City rallied ahead.
