Spring Recital Celebrating Music Week
More than five months of intense vehicle restoration work by a group of Po-Hi students and their faculty advisors culminated yesterday when the Ponca City team departed for Tacoma, Washington.
Team members are Robert Scott, Matt Brewer, Paul Oblad, J.D. Hanks, Greg Cunningham and Steve Hermann.
They will participate in the "X" Cup competition of the 16th annual Great American Race beginning Sunday, May 31, from Tacoma. Only five high school teams from across the United States have been selected to participate in the event. Student teams will compete for college scholarships, which will be awarded at the completion of the cross-country rally race in Haverhill, Mass., on June 13.
In addition to the complete restoration of a 1939 Model A Ford pickup to drive during the race, the team worked to raise funds to cover the cost of their participation in the event, as required by the Great American Race organization, but departed still short of their goal.
Anyone wishing to make a tax-deductible donation to support the teams effort may contact Vern Cunningham at 765-5998, or mail a check, payable to NJM Great Race, to Box 774, Ponca City, OK 74602-0774.

Jack Barrington reports that the RAF was well represented at Monday's Memorial Day ceremonies at the IOOF Cemetery. In addition to Jack and fellow Ponca Citian Harold Cogman, attending were Burt Sims of Enid and Rick Brown and Bill Haynes of England.

Jack added that Monday's event was "one of the best we've had"
and attendance was very good. He gave credit to the American Legion and
VFW posts for the success of the event.

New Ponca City Area Chamber of Commerce Chairman Richard Severance, presiding at his first board meeting, energized the board by encouraging them to become proactive and to get involved in issues that are important to the Chamber and to the future of Ponca City.
Severance said he had talked with a number of the people in the community about what the Chamber could do to make a significant difference. He noted that outside of the City Commission there isn't a defined leadership focus.
The new chairman, who is filling the unexpired term of Scott Dean, who has moved, said it is important for Ponca City to establish a common direction. He noted that there had been great successes in economic development and now Ponca City must decide where it goes from here. Other issues to be addressed are education and the fact that the population growth is flat.
Severance noted there is no comprehensive strategic plan for the city. He said the Chamber could be a part of helping with such a plan, which should include "where we are, and where will the present course take us."
"We need to ensure the voice of the business community is heard by the City Commission and we should let the elected officials know what our views are," he said.
Earlier during treasurer Jim Lindsay's report it was noted that the Chamber membership drive resulted in 60 new members, about half of what has been enlisted in recent years' membership campaigns.
Lindsay reported that those working the drive had said there aren't that many new businesses locating in Ponca City from which to draw.
"The community has a lot of positives to offer and we need to pull it together - Ponca City Tomorrow has the vision but it is not clear who is doing what," Severance commented.
Concerning the Chamber Board meetings, Severance assured the board he would appreciate any feedback that would make the meetings better and also asked for suggestions on what more should the Chamber be doing for the community.
Craig Myers, chairman-elect said he would like to hear more issues discussed in the meetings. Jan Jarrett, Chamber CEO, said he felt too much time is spent in the past making reports and that there is a lot of brain power in the meetings and the time should be used for issues.
Mark Detten, Home National Bank, and Jim Harwick, Sykes, were confirmed as new members of the board. They replace Ed Trice and Glenn Perkins.
Myers reported on the goodwill trip to Oklahoma City to visit legislators and various departments of the state. Also there was an audience with Gov. Frank Keating, and Lt. Gov. Mary Fallin.
Better Information
It was pointed out that the news story about the trip had inaccurately reported the possibility of trading of right-of-way along Highway 177 with the Ponca Tribe for land in town. The information on trading land was from the city's standpoint, which is interested in acquiring acreage south of town that belongs to the Ponca Tribe for a landfill and that has nothing to do with the right-of-way matter.
Other reports were given by the business and community development, economic development advisory board and the staff.
It was announced by Connie McAbee that the Presidents social is slated for May 26 at Godfreys.
Larry Felix requested that the July 4th Fireworks celebration be listed on next month's agenda. He said NationsBank will be the corporate sponsor and that other funds will build toward the turn-of-the century celebration in the year 2000.
