Crime Stoppers Tip Helps Solve Hit-and-Run

A Crime Stoppers tip has aided Ponca City Police officers to apprehend a 42-year-old woman in connection with a hit-and-run accident that occurred Sunday.

Police used the Crime Stoppers information late Wednesday afternoon to question the woman, and reportedly obtained a confession in connection with the hit-and-run accident. The accident injured two Kansas teens.

A 17-year-old male, who suffered a broken pelvis and a concussion, remains hospitalized after he was struck while walking with a companion near a curb of the intersection of West Cherry Avenue and North Waverly Street just after 2:30 a.m. May 17.

The 17-year-old was thrown nearly 40 feet from the point of impact. A 13-year-old female was also struck and suffered a broken arm.

Information will be prepared and submitted to the Kay County District Attorney's office. The suspect is a Marland resident, and is expected to be formally charged at a later date in connection with the hit and run.

Start of Project Delayed a Day For Presentation

A four-block improvement project of East Hartford Avenue set to begin next week will be delayed one day, according to Ken Parr, Public Works director.

The reconstruction and widening of Hartford Avenue between Jane Street and about a half-block east of Joe Street, which had been on the schedule a year ago, is set to begin on May 27 instead of May 26.

Parr said the one-day delay of Hartford Avenue's phase two construction is in order for a presentation to be made at the Tuesday City Commission meeting of the scheduled work on street improvement projects in the north section of Ponca City. That session is set for 5:30 p.m. at the Public Safety Center.

The reconstruction of Hartford Avenue east from North Fifth Street to Jane Street was completed two summers ago, but the second phase was delayed at the request of residents and business owners in the area, to allow completion of the Fifth Street project.

Chamber News

By TIM BURG
Communications Committee Chairman Economic Development Advisory Board

New businesses are a wonderful addition to our community and we certainly enjoy the opportunity to bring new companies to our community. However, it is equally important to recognize the existing businesses that reinvest in our community, either through expansion, retooling or new jobs. These are businesses that continue to support our community through a strong belief that Ponca City, besides being a profitable location for business, is a great place to live and work.

Such a success is the ongoing expansion at Mid America Door Company. Currently Mid America Door Co. is doubling the size of its facility from 40,000 square feet to 80,000 square feet Included in this facility expansion are increased areas for manufacturing, offices, shipping and handling of materials. Sophisticated new equipment is also being added, which will allow for an increase in efficiency and production. As the project moves ahead, the newly added equipment and facilities will allow Mid America Door Co. to enhance their already growing line of overhead door products.

As the project developed, representatives of the Economic Development Advisory Board (EDAB) were pleased to work with company officials to help them structure a plan which would maximize the use of state level and local area incentive assistance mechanisms. These programs are geared toward helping an expanding company take advantage of the most effective cost and tax strategies.

Construction is expected to be completed on the manufacturing areas by mid May and the new office areas will be completed approximately mid June. Construction and new equipment costs reinvested at the facility have totaled over $3 million. The firm believes that this investment will result in stabilizing its work force, allow for more efficiency of operations and allow them to continue to increase their customer base. Currently Mid America Door Co., which has been in business in Ponca City for seven years, employs 115 with an annual payroll in excess of $2 million.

Success is often presented in many forms. We take this opportunity to express our appreciation to Joe Neylon, president/CEO of Mid America Door Co. and the great group of employees who continue to do a great job of producing quality products made in Ponca City. Their belief in our community and in our citizens has earned our sincere thanks. Congratulations!!!

Ponca City Cardiologist Recently Puts First Cardiac Loop Recorder in Patient

OKLAHOMA CITY - Cardiologist and electrophysiologist Pavel Riha, MD, PhD at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Ponca City, recently implanted Oklahoma's first cardiac loop recorder in Oklahoma City.

The implantable loop recorder is 1 1/2 inches long, 1/2 inch wide, and 1/4 inch deep and is implanted under the fatty tissue inside the chest area below the shoulder. The new device records heart rhythms continuously and can detect previously undiagnosed syncope in 90-95 percent of patients over a 14-month period.

"There are many patients who have infrequent but potentially very dangerous heart arrhythmias," Riha said. "They are difficult to diagnose and treat because of their infrequency. Previously, we've only been able to monitor over a period of 30 days with external monitors which definitely interfere with a person's lifestyle. In contrast, the new loop recorder allows people to do any activity with no interference."

It is estimated that the new loop recorder will significantly lower the cost of the $750 million now spent by the U.S. each year evaluating and treating undiagnosed syncope and the $700 million spent in hospitals annually treating patients 55 and older for falls and injuries attributed to undiagnosed syncope.

In addition, it is thought that the new device will reduce the number of days spent by patients in the hospital while undergoing extensive testing.

Jerry Wayne of Shattuck was the first recipient of the implantable loop recorder. "Jerry is a perfect candidate for the loop recorder," said Riha. "At age 32, he was experiencing infrequent but dangerous fainting spells without warning. An entire work-up of lab tests, cardiac catherization, stress testing, echocardiogram, a tilt table test and complete electrophysiology studies, were inconclusive. Yet, because of the fainting spells he lost his job and livelihood. Using the new loop recorder, we can find out what the problem is and then treat it appropriately."

For additional information regarding the implantable loop recorder or any cardio-vascular problems please call Dr. Riha of Healthy Heartbeat P.C., 1-888-765-1118.
