From the pages of The Ponca City News, Monday, March 26, 2001 LOCAL DEATHS NEWS BRIEFS LIFESTYLES SPORTS LOCALShirley Bellmon Honored During Museum Ceremony Shirley Bellmon Honored During Museum CeremonyBy LOUISE ABERCROMBIE News Staff Writer The energy and specialness of Shirley Bellmon, twice first lady of Oklahoma, was recognized with the unveiling of her portrait Saturday evening at the Pioneer Woman Museums Wall of Fame ceremony. Unveiling of the portrait was by the late Mrs. Bellmons husband Henry Bellmon. Bellmon, the former two-term Oklahoma governor and U.S. senator, was accompanied by his and Shirleys three daughters, Gail Wynne, Enid; Pat Hoerth and husband Jim, Enid, and Ann McFerron, of Maryland. Also present were Mrs. Bellmons brother, Dan Osborn and his wife Nona, and a sister-in-law Mary Osborn wife of another brother, Max. The wall of fame features women from Oklahoma who have made a significant contribution to history in the state and the nation. Mistress of ceremonies was Jayne Detten, chairman of the Pioneer Woman Museum Advisory Board. Mrs. Detten said, Shirley Bellmon was a real lady, common, did not take on any airs. She was down to earth, whole-heartedly worked for and to promote the success of women through home-based business and was supportive of her home town of Billings. Among the special guests were Kathy Dickson, director of museums for the Oklahoma Historical Society, Mayor Tom Leonard and his wife Ann. Mrs. Bellmon made many contributes to Oklahoma during her two terms as first lady. She operated the First Lady Doll Collection factory at Billings, the First Lady Cafe and served on the board of the Henry Bellmon Library, slated to open this fall. The library will now recognize both Henry and Shirley Bellmon and is planned for opening Labor Day weekend, when Henry turns 80. The library is to feature memorabilia from both of the Bellmons. The restaurant, which had been closed following the death of Shirley in July, has reopened in Billings and is known as the Order Up Cafe. The factory and the cafe were deeded to the city of Billings for $1 by Henry Bellmon in early December. The unveiling ceremony of Mrs. Bellmons portrait climaxed a day of activities celebrating Womens History Month with the theme Power in a Velvet Glove. The events included a luncheon featuring a turn-of-the century style show by the Friends of the Guthrie Museum, narrated by Betty Boyd, TV personality, and Sheren Bowers of Guthrie. Denise Bode, Corporation commissioner, was the featured speaker and spoke about women in politics. The events were a joint effort of Conoco and the Pioneer Woman Museum Advisory Board.
