Police Receive Calls on Scam Of Foreign Bank

The Ponca City Police Department has been receiving calls concerning a scam that circulates almost continuously, according to Lt. E.B. VanArsdale.

Lt. VanArsdale said the scam is called "the Nigerian Bank Scam" and it involves the potential victim receiving a letter from a person claiming to be an official of the Nigerian Government.

The letter, according to the police, attempts to enlist the aid of the victim in transferring a large sum of money, usually $35,000,000 from Nigeria into a U.S. bank account. The letter promises a generous percentage of the money to the victim for their assistance.

According to the police the letter also provides an overseas telephone or fax number for the victim to call, and then the criminal begins a process that allows the removal of money from the victim's legitimate bank accounts. Also, in some instances, the victims have been asked to travel overseas where they have been victimized in person.

Police say the United States Postal Inspectors Service has an open investigation into this scam. Anyone receiving one of these letters can forward it to the postal inspectors free of charge by marking it "Forward to Postal inspector" and placing it with their outgoing mail.

Democrat Candidate For Governor Here

Rep. Laura Boyd, Democrat candidate for governor, will be in Ponca City Friday to visit with local Democrats.

Beginning at 11:30 a.m., and throughout the lunch hour, Rep. Boyd will be in the meeting room at Pizza Hut, 2301 North Fourteenth Street.

Rep. Boyd is running on "a platform of hard work, responsibility, and common sense." She was first elected to the Oklahoma House of Representatives, District 44, Norman, in November 1992.

Her accomplishments include authoring the Ryan Luke Bill to protect abused children and the zero tolerance bill against underage drinking and driving. She has introduced legislation to set up tax-free educational savings accounts that help make college and vocational education more affordable. Tax relief for small businesses has also been a priority.

"As a business woman, I understand the importance of keeping taxes low and the state's economy moving," Boyd said. Being a parent and licensed marriage and family therapist, she is also concerned about education, family values and safe neighborhoods.

Rep. Boyd is "fighting to change the system where government puts the interests of a privileged few ahead of the concerns of working families."
