Walkaway From Jail Returned to Custody

By MARK GALVIN
News Staff Writer

NEWKIRK - A county jail inmate here lost months' worth of trusty status and faces an escape charge after he allegedly walked away from his maintenance job assignment at the courthouse Saturday evening.

Sheriff's deputies arrested Monty Thompson, 33, at a Blackwell residence on Sunday. He was back in jail approximately 24 hours after he left.

County Undersheriff Sid Cookerly said Thompson "signed out to his normal job" to buff the courthouse floors at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, but authorities later found the courthouse lights on and the trusty gone.

The alleged act was termed "a walkaway-from-job-assignment, but legally, he's an escapee," Cookerly said.

He said the department tracked Thompson from Newkirk to a motel room overnight in Osage County across the river from Ponca City. A woman who checked into the motel with him is also believed to have picked him up from Newkirk, the undersheriff said.

As the manhunt continued Sunday morning, a Blackwell police officer reported a Ponca City taxicab driving south on Main Street there, and the investigation ultimately led to a residence, where Thompson was arrested without incident shortly before 6 p.m. Sunday.

He was first returned to the county jail, but transported later Sunday night to authorities in Enid.

Cookerly said Thompson was a state inmate sentenced out of Garfield County, serving a sentence totaling 15 years for two counts of uttering a forged instrument after former felony conviction.

"He had worked his way up to being a trusty and was assigned as a maintenance worker" for an assignment that started last May 16 at the Kay County facility, Cookerly said.

The undersheriff believed family problems triggered the impulsive act, because Thompson the night before reportedly had paid $20 to another inmate who hand-knitted him a blanket for a gift to his 5-year-old daughter.

The young girl had been scheduled to visit him on Sunday, but the plans apparently changed abruptly in a phone conversation on Saturday, Cookerly said.

On Sunday night, the blanket remained in the basement of the courthouse, he said.

Delia Catherine Castor

Delia Catherine Franklin Castor died Feb. 23, 1997 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25, 1997 at the First United Methodist Church of Ponca City under the direction of Trout Funeral Home. There will be no visitation as she wished her body to be donated to science.

She was born July 21, 1913, on a claim in Washita County near Cordell. Her parents Nell Baker Franklin and W.A. Franklin were teachers in several western Oklahoma towns. She graduated from Goodwell High School.

The family moved to Norman while her father worked on his Doctorate and Delia on her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree at the University of Oklahoma. She was a member of El Modiii, honorary art fraternity, and elected to the Association of Oklahoma Artists in 1934. She graduated in 1936 and moved with her family to Ponca City. The house at 408 North Fifth - originally built by Ponca founder B.S. Barnes - soon had a ceramics studio added to the garage.

In 1938 she married fellow artist Harold Castor. Together they produced ceramics and paintings for the Castor Studio, located in the Fifth Street home. She chaired the Ponca observances of National Arts Week in 1940 and 1941 and taught art classes in Ponca City and at Northern Oklahoma Junior College in Tonkawa. The marriage ended in divorce.

In Garden Clubs, two of which her mother founded, she had an ideal outlet for her combined love of nature and art. In 1946 Delia was president of the Ponca City Council of Garden Clubs. She developed a professional career as a flower arranger and flower show judge. In her home based business, Delia Castor Creations, she made felt replicas of 48 species of birds and sold them to every state in the Union. One year, members of the Oklahoma delegation to the National Garden Club Convention wore Delia's felt scissor tails as the state's badge. Governor Johnston Murray's wife took birds as favors to the governor's wives at a National Governor's Conference.

In 1947 she organized a Flower Show Judging School in Ponca City. The same year two of her arrangements were ranked in the top ten of their classes in a contest sponsored by the national Council of State Garden Clubs. In 1951 one of her arrangements was chosen for illustration in the Flower Arrangement Calendar. During this time she wrote and illustrated articles on flower arranging that appeared in Farm Journal, Hollands, Popular Hobbies, and the Oklahoma Gardener. Three of her creations appeared in the New York Times (Feb. 8, 1953). She wrote a book-length manuscript on flower arranging.

In 1952 she was nationally certified in flower arrangement and flower show practice. That year she was invited to make the official Oklahoma arrangement at the National Garden Club Convention and she was chosen to be State Garden Chairman of the Oklahoma Federation of Women's Clubs. In 1955 she was accredited as a flower show school instructor, one of five in Oklahoma. She judged flower shows statewide including the Ponca City Iris Festivals through 1995.

From 1960 to 1964 she wrote a weekly column about trees in the Ponca City News. And in the tradition of her father she continued to write letters to the editor in support of civic enrichment projects such as the Hutchins Memorial and the Indian Museum and Cultural Center.

In 1968 she became curator of the Indian Museum for the next ten years, until she reached the age of retirement. She taught herself the Native American art of finger weaving and produced hundreds of sashes in her spare time.

From 1957 to 1985 she participated in programs teaching nature and crafts for Campfire Girls. In 1990-91 she helped Vinita Oklahoma's Main Street Project beautify the City with day lilies.

The Ponca Council of Garden Clubs made her an honorary council president from 1993 to present. Besides the Council she belonged to the Chrysanthemum Garden Club, the Day Lily Society, the First United Methodist Church, and the Oklahoma Historical Society. During her active career she was associated with the Federated Women's Clubs, Ponca City Business and Professional Women, the Oklahoma Ornithological Society, the Oklahoma Anthropological Society, Dorcas Quilters Guild, the Ponca City Art Association, the Panhandle State Alumni Association, the OU Alumni Association, and Campfire Girls.

Survivors include a daughter Adelia Hanson, a son-in-law Bertil Hanson of Stillwater, a son William H. of Tulsa, three grandsons Will Castor, Jon Hanson, Peter Hanson, and a great-grandchild Lindsey Castor.

Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, 200 South Sixth Street, Ponca City 74601; or the Ponca City Council of Garden Clubs, Mavis Robison treasurer, 1613 Shirlee, Ponca City, 74604.

Young Pleased With Po-Hi Showing

By FRED HILTON
News Sports Editor

Given the tough eastern regional wrestling field at Jenks, Ponca City coach Pat Young is pleased he is taking three regional runners-up to the state tournament in Norman.

"We would have liked to take more," the coach said while resting his voice Sunday. "But it was a tough, tough tournament. I think we did pretty well. We came close to scoring 100 points (94) which is pretty good for most regionals.

"In addition to the three second placers, the Wildcats also had one fifth placer (Jay Bentley at 189 pounds) and two sixth placers (Doug Scott at 135 and Darrin Smith at 145).

"Choctaw (which won the East title) scored 232. I'm surprised they got that many points," Young said. "It's almost unheard of to score more than 200 points in a regional."

Broken Arrow was the only team to give the Yellow Jackets a race. The Tigers score 187.5 points while Putnam City North had 142 and Muskogee 131.

Choctaw advanced 10 wrestlers to the state tournament in Norman while Broken Arrow will send eight. Edmond Memorial, which finished behind Del City and Midwest City in the West Regional team scoring, also has eight qualifiers while Del City and Midwest City each have seven.

Ponca City's three regional finalists will have tough matches at state, but probably not any tougher than they faced at Jenks.

In a battle of defending state champions, Mark Dodgen (112 pound champion last year) went against unbeaten Matt Holman of Choctaw (formally of Broken Arrow where he was the 119-pound champ). Holman got a third-period takedown to win 3-2 at 119.

At 125, Matt Dodgen faced Chris Forbes of Broken Arrow, who was fourth in the state at that weight last year. Forbes scored early and held on, 5-2.

Stockton Graves lost a controversial 4-3 sudden-death decision to Duston Walker of Putnam City North at 160.

Coach Young was figuring out different methods of attack for his three grapplers even before he left the Jenks fieldhouse.

"There's a good chance they will meet those same opponents again" he said of the upcoming state battles. "But we have to get there (the finals) first. They face some tough matches.

Mark Dodgen (23-3) will open his 119-pound title bid against Jay Hannah of Norman (20-7), the third placer in the West Regional. Also on his side of the bracket is Dace Blankenship (26-6) of Mustang, the west champion.
