Police Investigate Reports Of Vandalism to Vehicles

By JEFF POLITTE

News Staff Writer

Once again, several Ponca City residents reportedly fell victim to a string of tire slashings. This time, vehicles parked in the 1100 and 1200 blocks of South Fifth Street, 800 and 1100 blocks of South Seventh Street and the 800 block of East Cherry Street, five in all, fell victim to this crime, which occurred sometime late Saturday night and early Sunday morning.

Late last month, between Jan. 21 and 22, two juvenile boys, a 10-year-old and a 14-year-old, were “caught-in-the-act” by a local resident while they were allegedly attempting to commit similar crimes in the 2600 block of North Fifth Street. Police believe these two boys may have been responsible for as many as 27 tire slashings during a two-night vandalism spree.

“Vandalism is a very serious crime and we would be interested in finding out who is responsible for them,” said Sherry Bowers, police information officer. She also noted vandalism is a misdemeanor crime and, if the person or persons responsible are convicted, restitution on behalf of the victims will be sought.

According to Bowers, police are unsure at this time if the two cases are related. She is asking that if anyone has any information regarding these crimes or any other crimes contact Ponca City Area Crime Stoppers at 762-5100. Callers will remain anonymous and may receive a reward of up to $1,000.

NOC Hosts Eastern For Homecoming

TONKAWA — Playing at home for the first time since the memorial for Jared Weiberg, son of coach Mick Weiberg, who was killed in the OSU plane crash, Northern Oklahoma College’s men and women will hold Homecoming tonight against Eastern

The Mavericks will be attempting to shake off that emotional even and a pair of conference losses to Carl Albert Saturday.

The women’s game start at 6 p.m., the men play at 8 in Foster-Piper Field House.

The Northern Maverick men’s basketball team fell to Carl Albert on Saturday afternoon in an overtime battle, 84-83, that could have gone either way.

Despite the fact they hadn’t played in 10 days and were missing head coach Mick Weiberg. The Mavericks played well.

Wearing No. 31 patches in memory of fallen friend Jared Weiberg, who was among those lost in the OSU airplane tragedy, the Mavericks took the court under the direction of assistant coach Greg Shamburg.

The Mavericks fell behind by seven in the early going. But the team fought back and tied things up at 22 with 7:20 on the first half clock when Edmond sophomore Scott Prater sank a bucket from inside.

The see-saw battle was tied again at 29 when Tulsa sophomore Greg Wilson drained a 3-pointer and with three minutes left, sank two free throws to put NOC up 33-31.

Northern only allowed Carl Albert a single free throw in the last three minutes, going into the locker room with a 44-32 advantage.

Three Northern players were in double figures at the end of the first half. Prater already had 11. Wilson had 10. Edmond sophomore Richie Myers, who had scored a career high 39 in the Mavericks last game, already had 15 points from inside.

Carl Albert was playing their homecoming game slowly came back in the second half. Then with a minute left on the game clock, leading scorer Myers fouled out with the score tied at 76. He had 26 points.

Carl Albert went up by two with 40 seconds left, but freshman C. J. Johnson puts up a shot with time on the shot clock expiring and ties the game at 78 with 23.9 seconds on the clock.

As Carl Albert sets up for the final shot, Northern freshman Andrews bats the ball away sending the game into overtime.

In the defensive struggle of the extra period, Wilson streaks inside and grabs a lay-up to give Northern the one-point lead at 81-80. But Carl Albert hits one of two free throws to tie the score with 1:26 remaining.

Prater comes down and sinks one from inside despite being double-teamed, sending Northern to the front by two. Carl Albert answers with a bucket and draws the foul with 25 seconds on the clock.

The Mavericks get off one final shot, but it rolls off the rim.

Frontier Girls Lose Twice

RED ROCK — The Frontier Lady Mustangs had a tough Friday and Saturday night on the home court. Yale scored with 6 seconds left Friday to win 47-46. The ladies returned to the gym floor Saturday on senior night to lose to Medford 43-25.

“The game against Yale was a nip and tuck game all night,” Lady Mustang coach Greg Jackson said. “Courtney Burgess had a season high 31 points. They couldn’t stop her inside and they couldn’t stop her outside.

“She had a great night. We just came up short.”

Post player Robin Pratt played the first quarter on senior night but sat out the rest of the game due to a stress fracture caused by a severe case of shin splints.

“The only reason she played at all was because it was senior night,” Jackson said. “I couldn’t keep her on the bench in the last home game of her high school career.”

The Lady Mustangs trailed the entire Medford game.
