Investigation Continuing In Fatal Pre-Christmas Fire

Local authorities are still busy investigating the pre-Christmas fire that killed a mother and injured her two children near Kaw City.

According to Sheriff Marion Van Hoesen the investigation is still on-going with no suspects at this time. "We are working very hard on this case and questioning a lot of people," Van Hoesen said. "We still have no suspects at this time."

The sheriff declined comment on reports that one of the girls was physically assaulted by the suspect prior to the house being set on fire.

Earlier this week the State Medical Examiner had officially identified the body, burned beyond recognition in the blaze, as that of 28-year-old Shirley Kay Clinton. According to M.E. investigator Kelly McCammon the cause of death was ruled a "homicide pending investigation." McCammon added that it may be as long as four weeks before lab results come in and their office determines another cause of death.

The State Fire Marshal Office has ruled the fire an arson and also confirmed that the fire was started in the bedroom and the living room of the house. A vehicle parked outside was also destroyed in the blaze.

It will also take weeks before anything definite comes from the Fire Marshal's Office. "We are sending samples taken from where the fire was started and sending them to the OSBI Lab," Shannon Rowland of the Fire Marshal's office said. "As soon as those results are in we will then know what type of accelerant was used to start the fire."

The two Clinton children were taken by ambulance to St. Joseph Regional Medical Center after sustaining injuries in the fire that started at approximately 5 a.m. They were treated and later released.

The children and Clinton were reportedly tied up before the fire was set. The children were able to free themselves and were later found at a nearby church.
