Bitter Cold, Additional Snow Keep State, Area in Freezer

From Staff and AP Reports

Bitterly cold temperatures lingered in Oklahoma after a weekend of snow that caused at least one fatal traffic accident.

Cold temperatures and snow flurries are expected today, but an approaching storm system could drop freezing rain, sleet and snow across the state on Tuesday.

Ponca City and north central Oklahoma stayed in the deep freeze throughout the weekend. After Saturday's high of 18 degrees at the Ponca City Airport, the mercury dipped to 9 degrees overnight before climbing to 23 Sunday. The area received an official half-inch of snow Sunday. The low overnight was a frigid 9 degrees but had "warmed to 11 degrees by 7 a.m. and 15 by 11 a.m.

There's a 40 percent chance of snow or sleet in north central Oklahoma Tuesday.

One to 3 inches of snow fell in portions of southwest Oklahoma on Sunday. The National Weather Service issued a snow advisory for the Oklahoma Panhandle tonight and a winter storm watch was posted for eastern Oklahoma for Tuesday.

Daytime highs in the teens and 20s should warm into the 20s and 30s on Tuesday, which is why freezing rain and sleet may fall instead of the powdery snow that blanketed the area over the weekend, forecasters said.

In addition, winds of 10 to 15 mph could produce wind chills between zero and minus 20 degrees, the weather service said.

One to 3 inches of snow fell in portions of southwest Oklahoma on Sunday. Little or now additional accumulation was reported around the state.

The weather service said the 2.5 inches of snow that fell in Oklahoma City on Sunday tied a record for Jan. 12, set in 1968.

A strong upper-level disturbance approaching from the southwest will combine with entrenched arctic air to produce a threat of more wintery precipitation tonight and Tuesday, the weather service said.

Much of the precipitation should fall as snow tonight, but it could be mixed with sleet and/or freezing rain, mainly in southern sections of the state through Tuesday.

Forecasters were unsure earlier today if significant or any icing would occur, meteorologist Wayne Ruff said.

Areas south of Interstate 40 would be the most vulnerable to the mix, while north of the I-40 could see mostly snow, Ruff said. may not occur if the storm tracks more to the north.

Icy roads are blamed for the death of a Cushing teen-ager, who was killed late Saturday when he lost control of his pickup truck.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said Todd Cochran Swain, 17, was driving on a Payne County road about four miles southeast of Cushing when his pickup hit a patch of ice, slid and struck a tree.

Slick spots dotted roadways across Oklahoma and north Texas because of snow that fell through Sunday.

''They're in fairly decent shape. We're just advising everyone to watch for slick spots, especially on bridges and overpasses,'' patrol dispatcher Brian Thompson said from Lawton.

Most area law enforcement agencies said people apparently were staying close to home.

''The roads are messy and we're definitely discouraging travel,'' said Kiowa County sheriff's deputy Dale Harris.

Road crews have been out since the snow fell to make sure Tulsa motorists don't encounter hazardous spots, said Paul Strizek, a spokesman for the Public Works Department.

''We're glad this snowfall happened on Sunday, since there's not as many cars on the road,'' Strizek said. ''The trucks have been able to get around well enough to keep on top of the situation, and they'll continue to do so through the week.''

Nearly News

NN understands 1,100 people braved the snow to see "Heaven's Gates & Hell's Flames" Sunday night and declared it a "drama you'll never forget." And folks, it really is a drama and not a movie as we reported earlier. There is still time to see it, now through Wednesday at Hutchins Memorial. And it's free.

Police Submit Details of Scam

The Ponca City Police Department recently submitted details of a mail scam to U.S. Postal Inspectors.

On Thursday, a Ponca City resident received a certified letter from a firm in Jacksonville, Fla., stating the recipient won $25,000 in a sweepstakes. The potential victim was asked to send a $49 judging fee to claim the prize.

According to Lt. E.B. VanArsdale, several points of the letter should raise someone's suspicions. First, the letter did not provide a name for the contest and the recipient did not remember entering a contest. Additionally, a fee was required in order to collect the prize. Also, the recipient had a short time period in which to reply.

The address where the fee was to be mailed included a street address with a "suite" number. This is a strong indication that the address is a private postal box company.

The potential victim felt inclined to respond to the scam because the letter came certified mail. However, VanArsdale said anyone can send a certified letter for less than $2. He said the criminal would have netted a $46 profit for each letter returned.

If you feel you have been a victim of a scam, contact VanArsdale at 767-0376.

Jaycees Sponsoring Town Hall Meeting, Voter Signup

Members of the Ponca City Jaycees have announced their first town hall meeting and voter registration drive to be held during Jaycee Week Jan. 12-18. The town hall meeting and voter registration drive will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Conoco Fourth Street Clubhouse.

Newly elected state Rep. Jim Newport will be featured at the town hall meeting. The meeting will allow citizens to meet with Rep. Newport and hear his views of issues upcoming in the state legislature and to provide feedback from citizen's interests and concerns.

"This feedback will be important to Newport, allowing him to better serve the district." said Ponca City Jaycee President John Williams. "We are fortunate to provide this forum and hope all interested citizens will take advantage of this opportunity to meet with Rep. Newport."

In combination with the town hall meeting, the Ponca City Jaycees will also be hosting a voter registration drive during the week. Any citizen of voting age who is not registered to vote, or anyone needing to change their voter registration, is encouraged to attend, says Williams.

"The Jaycees have long advocated voter registration through their national 'Get Out the Vote' program," he said. "The Jaycees are concerned about low voter registration and low voter turnout. We believe it is every citizen's responsibility to voice their opinion through the right to vote. We hope this voter registration drive will help encourage citizens to take a more active role in our government," says Williams.

For more information about the town hall meeting, voter registration drive or the Ponca City Jaycees, please contact Williams at 765-9719 or by e-mail at willijk@pcok.com.

Jaycee Week is an annual event celebrated by all Jaycees in the United States, and often features special community-related projects to help promote awareness of Jaycees and their activities.

Lady Mavs Down No. 6 Westark

FORT SMITH, Ark. - Northern Oklahoma's Lady Mavericks pulled off a stunner Saturday night in their second-semester debut, beating nationally sixth-ranked Westak here 74-72.

The Lady Mavs will get an opportunity to one-up that feat tonight as they travel to fifth-ranked Connors State tonight.

Against Westark, NOC led 42-32 at the half and increased the lead to 20 points early in the second half before Westark began its slow climb back.

Northern still led by 10 with five minutes to go but poor free throw shooting allowed the Lady Lions to pull closer and closer.

For the game, NOC was just 14 of 27 from the line. But the Lady Mavs offset that with tremendous field goal shooting, going 27-for-49 (55 percent).

"Westark's a good club," said NOC head coach Greg Krause. "This is a very gratifying win and will help our confidence a great deal."

Northern improved to 7-7 on the season while Westark fell to 11-3.

Lynetta Geter led the Mavs with 18 points and a team-high 13 rebounds. Jill Kliwer also reached double figures with 12 points.

Others scoring for Northern were Sherry Butts with 8, T.J. Humphries, 8; Michelle Brown, 6; Brandi McClellan, 6; Jennifer Whittet, 4; Chanda Myers, 3; and Cathy Rogers, 3.

Brown had a strong overall game with eight rebounds, five assists and four steals to go withher six points. Humphries led the squad in assists with eight.

In addition to the missed free throws, Krause also said his squad had a problem with 32 turnovers.

"That's a season high, but I knew with this being our first game back that we would have some turnovers," said Krause. "Westark had already played two games (in the second semester).

"The free throws almost killed us, though. We were just 6 of 14 in the second half."

"But this was a great win."

Krause said he wanted to get a split against Westark and Connors and now has that.

"The pressure's off tonight, they can just go have fun," he said.

East Central Invitational

BOTH PONCA City High School varsity basketball teams ended their stay in Ada Saturday with victories in the East Central University Invitational. The Wildcats defeated Lawton, 38-35, for third place while the Lady Wildcats downed Star Spencer 47-32 to take fifth and the consolation trophy.

The Cats and Lady Cats, both 3-5 on the season, are back in action Tuesday at home against Sand Springs.

After winning two of three games in the tournament and three of their last four, including an upset of then-No. 4 Owasso, the Lady Wildcats entered the Oklahoman's rankings this week at No. 20.

Four Wrestlers Place As Po-Hi Gains 11th

GEARY - Ponca City's Wildcats managed to place four wrestlers - two in the top four - as they battled through the rugged Geary tournament over the weekend.

"It's a tough, tough tournament," Po-Hi coach Pat Young said. "It is the toughest tournament anywhere. It had six of Class 5A's top teams plus several lower classes' top teams."

The Wildcats finished 11th in the team standings. Class 5A's No. 1 Choctaw won with 171.5 points, crowning five champions and placing six others. El Reno, No. 1 in Class 4A, was second with four champions and 153.5 points. Class 2A's top-ranked Tuttle managed just one champion.

The Wildcats were at a disadvantage in the team scoring with just nine wrestlers. The Cats received an unexpected setback when state champion Mark Dodgen failed to make weight trying to drop down to 119 pounds.

"He just waited too long to decide to go down," Young said. "He'll make the weight."

The Cats were also without Jay Bentley at 160 after he injured a knee in practice. The Cats were void at 130 and 189.

Matt Dodgen did reach 125 pounds and placed third. Stockton Graves was fourth at 171 pounds while Toby Redleaf (152) and heavyweight Cory Burkett each placed sixth.

Matt Dodgen ran into Midwest City's Jeff Wilson, who was second in the state last year, in the first round of the unseeded tournament and lost in overtime. He came back to win five straight matches for third place.

"That (125 pounds) may have been the toughest weight of the tournament," Young said. "Matt beat some good wrestlers, including Blankenship of Mustang and Henderson of Tuttle."

Wilson wound up placing second, losing to Choctaw's Matt Holman, 13-7, in the finals.

Graves also drew a tough first round foe, Tony Realmuto of Del City, who went on to win the 171-pound title. Graves came back with five wins, including two falls, before losing to Justin Walker of Putnam City North in the consolation finals.

Redleaf and Burkett were each 3-3 in the tournament.

Two other Poncans, Phillip Gelino at 103 and Jacob Beck at 135, came within one match of placing. Both were 1-2, as was Josh Bailey at 112.

The Wildcats are scheduled to travel to Bartlesville for a dual Tuesday and then enter the Sand Springs Tournament this weekend.

Eighth Grade Blue Girls

Ponca City's eighth grade Blue girls' basketball team suffered its first setback of the season but rebounded to take third place in the Edmond Tournament over the weekend.

The Blues defeated Oklahoma City Jefferson 33-23 in the first round of the tournament Thursday but then fell to tournament host Edmond Sequoyah 45-37 in the semifinals.

They then came back Saturday to pop Edmond Summit, 34-26, in the third place game.

The Poncans fell behind Summit 9-4 in the first quarter, but then went on an 11-1 run in the second quarter and were never headed.

Emily Kuchta and Candace Benson each had 8 points for the Ponca City girls while Aubrey Kelly had 7, Tyla Champlain 5, Jessica Plagman 4 and Erika Wiles 2.

"We came out kind of down (against Summit)," Blue coach John Maddox said. "But I told the girls we were still playing for a trophy and for our record. They woke up and started playing well after that."

The Blue Cougar girls play host to Stillwater Tuesday at 4 p.m. in a Northern Conference game. The Poncans are 8-1 overall, 4-0 in conference play.

Eighth Grade Red Girls

Ponca City's eighth grade Red girls ran into two tough teams in the Edmond Tournament Friday and Saturday.

In the first round against Norman Irving, the Poncans fell behind 18-6. They chipped away at the lead, closing to 32-24 to start the fourth period, but couldn't get over the hump.

On Saturday, Oklahoma City Moon pulled away in the final quarter to win a see-saw battle against the Poncans, 27-22.

Gina Birdsong had 11 points against Moon while Cara Cusick had 5, Jacee Sheppard 2, Abby Roth 2 and Frederick 2. Against Irving, Birdsong and Kim Love each had 10 points while Shepard had 5, Cusick 4, Roth 3 and Jessica Windom 3.

The Reds, now 6-3, travel to Stillwater today.
