Sooners Outlast SMU

Sooners Outlast SMU

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Nolan Johnson scored 21 points as No. 17 Oklahoma rallied from a 10-point deficit to beat Southern Methodist 79-78 in overtime Saturday in the championship of the Touchstone Energy All-College Tournament.

Johnson, named the tournament’s most valuable player, sank two free throws with 1:20 left to lift the Sooners to victory.

Oklahoma (11-1) trailed by five points early in overtime, but rallied for their fourth straight All-College title as SMU (9-3) missed two 3-pointers and a tip attempt in the last 46.6 seconds.

Johnson’s bank shot with 5.9 seconds left in regulation tied the game at 72-72.

SMU’s Jeryl Sasser missed a 3-pointer attempt at the buzzer to end regulation. The Mustangs’ Quinton Ross missed a 3-pointer with 2 seconds left in overtime and DeWayne Floyd missed a tip at the buzzer.

Kelley Newton scored 20 points and Hollis Price 11 for Oklahoma, which won the tournament for the 17th time. The Sooners have won the tournament 15 of the last 18 years.

Reserve guard Tim Heskett made three 3-pointers to help rally Oklahoma after SMU opened a 59-49 lead with 10:03 left.

Damon Hancock scored 18 points to pace SMU, which led 43-37 at halftime.

Willie Davis added 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Mustangs. Ross had 14 points, and Floyd and Sasser 13 apiece.

Kansas finishes non-conference schedule 11-1

Nobody can stay hot forever.

The starting five of Quentin Buchanan, Matt Siebrandt, Kelvin Howell, Richie Terry and Larry Reid had been crisp and efficient during Kansas State’s three-game winning streak. But they were a collective 2-of-23 in the first half of the Wildcats’ 81-58 loss Saturday to Memphis.

“We broke apart in every phase tonight,” said Kansas State coach Jim Wooldridge.

In a late-nighter, San Diego State beat Oklahoma State 87-66, one of Eddie Sutton’s most lopsided losses in 11 years as Cowboys’ coach.

Murray State outscored Nebraska 23-10 in the final eight minutes.

Collier questioned whether his team had the necessary mental toughness.

“I think we have some kind of mental deficiency that allows us to think we’re better than somebody else, that we’ll be OK,” said Collier, who’s in his first year after replacing Danny Nee. “OK gets you 15 points behind at home.”

The loss dropped the Huskers to 7-5. Murray State used a 22-4 run to take command midway through the opening half.”

Cookie Belcher led the Huskers with 26 points.

“We keep falling prey to teams which are not in the least afraid of us,” Collier said. “In some cases, we do not have the toughness we need. I don’t think it’s automatic we’ll learn that lesson. You have to be listening and willing to learn for that to sink in.”

Darren Kelly scored a season-high 30 points to lead Texas past Utah. The Longhorns held Utah without a field goal for the final 5:03.

In the fifth-place game of the Rainbow Classic in Honolulu, Bernard King scored nine of his 27 points in overtime to lead Texas A&M to an 81-72 victory over Detroit.

Chad Elsey scored 23 points, including a career-high seven 3-pointers, in Baylor’s victory over Montana. Baylor rose to 10-0 while shooting 55.4 percent.

Nolan Johnson scored 21 points to help Oklahoma rally from a 10--point deficit and beat SMU in overtime in the championship game of the Touchstone Energy All-College Tournament in Oklahoma City.

Nick Collison, making his sixth start of the year, had 17 points in Kansas’ romp past Southwest Missouri State, making 8 of 11 field goals. He’s missed only nine of his last 39 shots.

“Collison is their silent weapon,” said Southwest coach Barry Hinson. “He’s the most skilled big man they’ve got.”

Collison scored 11 of Kansas’ first 13 points of the second half as the Jayhawks finished their non-conference season 11-1 for the first time in four years. Kenny Gregory added 13 points and Drew Gooden had 10.

Oklahoma State suffered its third-worst loss in Sutton’s 11 seasons. It was also the Cowboys’ worst non-conference loss under Sutton and their worst since an 89-51 defeat at Memphis on Dec. 30, 1986.

San Diego State set a school record by making 13 of its 21 3-point attempts.
